I was trying to get rid of some of the most annoying slowdowns in the game, when I got this idea. Since it's extremely versatile, I thought I could share it without taking the risk to see the exact same thing in all hacks. So, the condition to use this is essentially that you'll make your own pattern (and possibly give credits but I don't care much about that). I won't give the data to avoid copy/paste, but the process is detailed and simple.

Since a few people have begged for a guide on making a character have its own palette in Sonic 2, I'll just throw my shitty code around. Since my original method didn't want to play nice with underwater palettes, I've essentially cloned PalPointers and gave the character a new set. This means that you could effectively have different level palettes for the character too if you wanted to.

If you have tried to add water to a zone ID between $00 and $07, you may have noticed strange effects with the water, such as the entire level filling with water or no water showing up at all (only the water line). To correct this problem, several changes need to be done to your disassembly. (This guide will use the Xenowhirl 2007 Sonic 2 disassembly; other disassemblies may vary.)

The palette fading routines in Sonic 1 and Sonic 2 (and possibly to a degree Sonic 3 & Knuckles) known as "Pal_FadeTo" and "Pal_FadeFrom", aren't 100% true to their name. MarkeyJester shows you how to fix it in Sonic 2.
