ok guys after reading posts here and at retro I have to say I am really quite dissapointed.... you all seem to hate redemption - when I first started this hack it was my intention to make a megamix style hack as megamix is the dogs... and now your all tearing me a new one becasue it is like megamix? Utopias level edits are awesome much better than some of the crap I have seen in some hacks and yea ok it has bugs... but its work in progress - show me a hack that dosnt have bugs !!! anyway even if nobody ever plays it again it has been a learning experiance into asm and I have had some great teachers - you guys know who you are :p

Yes, by pointing out bugs and recommending you give your beta testers a kick up the bum I am truly showing my fiery burning hatred for Redemption. grr.

If you didn't get the point of my earlier post:

Get some more beta testers. There's plenty of bugs yet to iron out that your current ones can't find.

I agree with lips, Its a shame really. I really like this hack! I mean, my hack has loads of bugs and thats why slz is only playable in the beta I released. This may have bugs sure, but don't look at it at that point of view. Take in the features, the art, the layout. And then sir, you see an awsome hack in progress and I look forward to seeing more. :p

I can understand what you're saying here Animemaster, but some of these bugs seriously affect the flow of gameplay, specifically those collision bugs, and personally, if my hack had that capsule bug, I'd wait to fix it first. I can understand UtopiaUK wanting to enter his hack into the contest, but a revision made afterwards to fix that bug would've been nice.

The capsule bug is a minor graphical glitch... I dont understand why it bothers you aso much - and I have been working on fixing bugs for the last week or so. I will now talk to utopia about a radical redesign.

I read some of things on Retro, so I downloaded the hack and I played it. I really like this hack. Everyone said the tubes kept messing up, it didn't for me. It was only one instance where I was going to fast and I just slowed down, I never got stopped, or anything else.

My number thing is the 1st level boss.

I BEAT IT ON MY FIRST TRY

I had my bubble the whole time, all you have to do is simple, stay in the middle and hit him once or maybe twice, tt isn't no big deal. I quit after I finished the first the level but I would say its pretty good. It needs to be improved on somethings and it does have similarities to Megamix though. (I play Megamix almost everyday)

Ok then so other than "FIx The Bugs" lol does anybody have any sugestions on what they think would improve this hack? - should we move away from the megamix type style? different zones? what do people think?

This isn't the people's hack. This is your hack. If you think Megamix is the dogs bollocks, and you are happy imitating that, do that. Do whatever you enjoy, not what other people are telling you to do, because there will always be some other person who thinks you should do the exact opposite. Even vast majorities of people do stupid shit collectively, so you can't even trust that the majority desicion is a good one. People might advise you to do X and by toiling away on making X a reality, all the fun is sucked out of the activity for you. You and your collaborators are the only people who's opinions matter. Its not a job, its a hobby. Your own happiness is the only thing you should be looking to get out of it, and usually with these things, the construction is far more fun than actually playing the finished product anyway. If being wildly popular and lauded is directly linked to how enjoyable you find the process of hacking, then I think you'll find yourself constantly frustrated.

Having said this, I'll now contradict myself by giving some general advice - make completely custom levels. You don't require any tech knowledge whatsoever to do it, you don't really need to be able to draw that well, and it will make your hack stand so far out from the crowd of recolours, slight edits and tweaks of existing zones and GHZ layout edit hacks you will not believe. The vast majority of the time a player spends with a game is not performing new moves or staring at shields or chasing rings that come out of badniks, but in running around the levels. Make something completely new, something fun to navigate around (inverted loops from s2:ae anyone?) and make it look pretty to look at. Thats the key to making it feel like its own game altogether, a hack in its own right. Shit, you could even have Megamix's exact same moveset, as long as you offer something new, a new zone to run around in, it will be a fresh experience. But of course, this is just one idiots view in a sea of idiots. Decide your own direction.

I loved the GHz and Lz artwork, the palettes of these zones too.

On SYz I found several bugs that have been mentioned on this topic, the act 1 and 3 palettes are strange, the act 2 is very good.

The level layouts have been well worked, allowing developing high speed and good difficulty.

This hack has good future, congratulations!

Huh? I've told him most of the bugs and he didn't fix them? Even told about that Plaza collision issues... what.

I also haven't recieved a beta for a while. Maybe that's why it's so buggy.

I saw that in SLZ has many ring monitors, I finish the acts with 400 rings.

I suggest you remove some monitors and put more moving objects.

Hello people, I am very sorry for not updating this thread for so long but as a few of you know I have recently been working on redemption again however it is pretty much a solo project now as utopia is busy with his s3k hack and markey is busy with brotro anyway I am happy to carry on with the asm parts but I really suck at level art and layouts so if there is anybody here that is good at such who wants to do a zone or two please let me know as it would be greatly apreciated. the kinda thing I am looking for is speed based levels that can take advantage of loops, boosters and springs and perhaps a couple of water based zones that are faster like hydrocity in s3k.

Anyway just to let you guys all know what I have been doing here is a small list:

Supersonic now with super trails and super stars

Save/load game feature (at the moment only saves zone, act and emerald) but will save score, lives and continues when finished

S3k sheild bugfixes - those of you that played the last version will be aware that my sheilds needed a lot of fixing/tuning

Seperate end of act title cards

Sonic CD style time 00:00:00 (still using sonic 1 colon for now - will have sonic cd ' when finished)

I havent posted any screenshots becasue there is nothing new level wise its all asm stuff at the moment, hence my post for help with zones and zone art.

Once again sorry for bumping this old topic I just wasnt sure if starting a new thread would have been appropriate.

Give me a holler sometime if you want a completely new level, though it will take a good while to prepare all the chunks.
