With the original release of version 1.0 being the first downloadable to the Sonic Hacking community on the 6th April 2009 (as featured on Sonic Retro); Sonic-Code Gray is a continuous attempt to reinvent the original Sonic 1 game with layouts, edited art, custom music, and new challenges being introduced without being too clustered or ridiculously easy to beat.

After quite some time of the rom being left in limbo, I have decided to release the latest installment showing how far things have got since the last upload (which was sometime back in mid-2010). Version 1.55 main features are different level layouts from GHZ to SYZ Act 2, then introduced again for SLZ Acts 1-3. Further art tweaks (nothing huge, but make things look more detailed in areas), use of jump-dash when you collect a shield, and introduces the "Lights Out Zone", a custom built level that can only be entered by finding the "?" monitor (which shouldn't be too hard). Completion of the zone also awards you with a extra life, 1200 points and warps you to LZ Act 1.

    (Generosity indeed!)

Credits go out to those who have featured tutorials/tools both from Sonic Retro and here on SSRG; for without them a lot of this hack would of not been possible.

(Download edited for level fix on MZ2 along with other minor bits and pieces. The game is now less cheap in areas too.)

I played up to Marble Zone Act 1 and I thought it was pretty good. The GHZ art change was nice although there was a very minor nitpick with the BG, the line between the mountains and the water looks a bit ugly, but again, very minor. I also liked the way you included AOSTH Robotnik. The music was pretty good too. Overall i'm looking forward for this hack's progress because your goals seem achievable, and if you reached them it would make a really good game.

If I been honest, I've never played this hack and I don't think I've heard of it either sorry. That being said, I'll give this version a try and post back. As for the screenshots, I like the ghz bg and the trees. I'll have to see what the fg like as well.

This hack's definitely improved. I've always liked this hack.

Glad to see it still up!

BTW, are there any level select cheat codes? The Original Sonic 1 Cheat doesn't work. :$

EDIT: Your layouts may need a little cleaning up, but other that that, they're really fun to play!

I played as far as Marble Zone, and I gotta say the layouts were awesome. Nice work!

Just to clarify on GalliumGrants post, the level select/debug cheats can still be activated by doubling each directional button (UUDDLLR A+start /UUCDDCLLCR A+start). Check out the other music tracks I've put in there too.

There's some cheap moments here and there. I think the furthest I got was MZ2 due to the somewhat unfair enemy placement. There's also some crashes when dying on Genesis Plus GX on the Wii with 68k lock-ups and address errors enabled, may be something to look at.

My main problem is that I'm running and then suddenly, out of nowhere, there's a buzzbomber or something smacking into me. I'd suggest looking at object placement, but otherwise from what I played I had some fun. Good music, too, love the use of 5-4-1 on the boss. Lovely art as well.

Definitely looking forward to the progress on this one.

Looking back through some zones, yeah I see what you mean DalekSam.....I'll see what I can do about placement of certain enemies. As for the Genesis Plus on Wii error, I had no idea about that nor would i have an idea on how to have a solution to it, sorry.

Well I believe this is my last post under trailist, just need to await on seeing if I'm allowed to become a official member or not. Bye for now.

Lights Out was fun. Had to use savestates, but it was hard fun. Nice to have a bonus challenge like that.

Glad to hear you got a challange out of it. If you get stuck trying to accomplish the stage without savestates next time, try looking for the hidden ring in the area. Then try and figure out how you can reach it. *craftygrin*

I love this hack, though I have to agree with Dalek on the object placement. : So I got to ask, can you post a list of all the songs you've added to your hack? I recognize one from Shinobi 3, and Labyrinth Zone's theme sounds very familiar... other than that keep up the great work. <_<

Yeah, and I also love challenges. This one is quite challenging, but the only tiring fact is that some parts (like the MZ boss) are simply impossible to get past without being hurt. The object placement is only a tiny bit weird and the palettes looks kinda odd... (Per example, SYZ act 1). This hack looks definitely very cool and fun of play. It's recently simple in comparison to other recent 'simple' hacks, but it's awesome.

A minor update can be found in the first post improving on some object placement; it's still not clear of all problems but does make things much stable instead of getting smacked easily.

Really? Because I can manage to beat it without getting hurt. Just time your jumps to the other side and only hit Robotnik once per interval.

seems this hack takes death horribly. If I ever die, it fucks up and gives me an error. I can usually get past it, but then my life icon gets screwed up. Not a real issue, but it should be addressed.

You wont get the error in Kega (or Gens, i don't think), but it will happen on hardware and in Regen. I've attached a couple of screenshots showing the error. If you don't know how to fix it here is some help: The first number in the error message is the location in the ROM of the instruction which is causing the error (open the sonic.lst file in a text editor and this number is shown next to the line of ASM) the second number is the address in RAM the instruction trying to write to. The problem is most likely that you are trying to write a word or a longword to an odd address, which will always cause an error.

$FFFFD012 is Sonic's Y speed, and $FFFFD014 is his ground speed, by the way, so you should be writing to one of those two addresses if you're trying to modify Sonic's speed when he dies.

Ah, I think I know what the problem is now as I did edit the death animation sprite of Sonic to go flying off screen if you happened to run into something that could hurt you while at a high velocity of speed e.g. Sonic runs directly into some spikes. Thanks for the advice Crash.

This is the precise error I reported earlier on my Wii; I could get around it like I said, but it's still an annoyance and should be fixed.

Okay, I've managed to find the code I edited in the .asm file and put it back to its original state. Regen has no problems with it now but I can't give the outcome on hardware as I got nothing to test run it unless someone here is willing to. Bottom line though is that the rom should be clear of this error in future releases.
