A new release with a focus on music! Another important thing in this update is that some screens have new tile arrangements, and for that I have to give a huge thanks to TheStoneBanana for helping me figure out how PlaneED works. Couldn't have done it without you, buddy! Here are some other changes:

    • Due to music not working right when speed shoes are applied, I made it play the Sonic rolling noise when he gets them.
    • I finally fixed the Molten Madness Zone music!
    • A bit more work done on Crystal Cave Zone.
    • Continue screen chanaged.
    • Modified title screen Sonic (color fixes).
    • Possibly other stuff.
    Now, I have two requests:

    • Could someone change the topic title to "Sonic Zoom (originally Untitled Sonic the Hedgehog Hack)" or just "Sonic Zoom".
    • Could somebody please make Eridan's theme from Homestuck an SMPS for the boss theme? Here's a link to it if you need one:

EDIT: I only need the song from 0:00 to around 1:06, and then loop back to around 0:08.

You should be able to change your topic title by editing your original post and clicking on Full Editor.

For the record, the red screen is a consequence of a wrong checksum. That particular ROM would work just fine in most emulators if you enable the checksum autofix option (both Gens and Kega have it, not sure about other emulators). Still, it's not good practice to do so, because it wouldn't work on a real configuration such as a real Mega Drive / Genesis.

As I recommended to someone else in another topic just a few hours ago, you can remove the checksum routine from your disassembly altogether, since it mainly slows down the boot process with no real benefit (unless something goes wrong for whatever reason while you burn your game on a flashcart).

Alternatively, if you want to alter your build script to change the ROM name, make sure to change it also in the line which fixes the checksum, or keep it as s1built.bin until the end, and add a new ren s1built.bin whatever.bin line at the very bottom of the batch file. If the name you want to use contains spaces, use double quotes: ren s1built.bin "Sonic Zoom.bin".

edit: used bold to avoid confusion with the double quotes

    edit 2: ffff typo

LOL Sonic Zoon. Anyways, if anyone didn't notice my edit on my last post, if you're going to make a SMPS of Eridan's theme, I only need it from 0:00 to around 1:06, and then to loop back to around 0:08. This song will probably be the only song request, unless I also want credits music, but I'm not sure yet.

Speaking of music. I was playing a bit with the Sound Test in your ROM. You should really fix the drum IDs in some songs. In my ones, remember that $84 is supposed to be a hand clap and $85 is supposed to be a cymbal. If you don't have those samples, I suggest you to change those IDs to $82 (snare) and $81 (bass drum) respectively.

You forgot some, for example in Sunset Park 3, but yes, it's better, it's good to see you know what you're doing :)

    And I lol'd.

Well, here I am. Post 20. Hopefully after I write this, I'll be accepted as a member. Just in case I'm not and stay in limbo forever, like at Sonic Retro, I want you guys to have this as a parting gift. It's not an update, but it's something:

    https://www.dropbox.com/s/t9fy8ps8wk1kobj/sonic_the_hedgehog.bin?dl=1

This is how "Sonic Zoom" started out. A palette-art-level-text hack made sometime around 2012 or 2013. During this time, I had no idea how dissasemblies worked, and thought I could just make a direct rom hack. After a while, I took a good look at it, and thought to myself "Would people really like this? Maybe I should give these 'dissasemblies' a try." After that, I used SonLVL and the SVN dissasembly, and that soon created the "Sonic Zoom" we know today.

I hope that I'll be accepted as a member here and continue work on this hack. If I won't become a member, I'll still remember all you nice people who had interest in this hack. I won't forget the help I got along the way, or the kind people I met either. You guys really helped me out, and all played a part in making this hack truly spectacular (at least, to me). Thank you all, and I hope this won't be the last time I post here.

Hey, don't talk like a gallows bird! I guarantee you will be accepted, you did nothing wrong. just don't lose the hope. (for example, I have promoted in 10 days.)

By the way, I'm kinda interested on this hack. I don't have a time to review it, sorry

    Keep up the good work!

I'm sure you'll be fine, looneydude. This hack shows that you are extremely capable, and you seem to follow all the rules to the letter. To put it in perspective, I did virtually the same thing with my trial posts, but my hack was much worse and far more incomplete then yours. I'm sure you'll be spectacular! :3

    Well, I'm now officially a member! Here's a treat:

    The new Continue Sonic.

Nineko, I've fixed up the Sunset Park boss song, even though some parts sound a bit odd now due to the switch from the glitch noise to a snare. Are there any other songs I've missed?

Anyways, I've started changing the checkered ground from Glazed Grass Zone and the circles from Casino Crisis. Should I keep these changes, give them a different design, or revert them back to the original?

As I suggested, you should have replaced the Cymbals with Bass Drums, not with Snares. Snares are more appropriates as a replacement for Hand Claps.

Bass drums? Which hex value is that? I re-added Sunset Park Boss with the static noises so I could change them to the bass drums.

EDIT 1: (Crap, it double posted)

EDIT 2: Whoever combined them into one, thank you!

Can't believe I overlooked that. Sorry.

Anyways, here's a new release with:

    • Reflective background water and a new ground texture (not finished) in Glazed Grass Zone.
    • New minor background elements and a new floor pattern in Casino Crisis Zone.
    • Completed level structure (still not done with the objects) in Crystal Caves Zone Act 1.
    • Fixed all songs missing instruments that I know of.
    • Game Over auto-end timer has been extended to #$FFFF, meaning you can listen to the song as long as you'd like.
    • Continue animation more fluent.
    • Cute new continue Sonic.
    • Sonic's art when on angles have been (mostly) fixed.
    • Possibly other stuff that I forgot to mention.

I know you may hate me for this, but I need to say something a bit off topic AND it's after another post of mine, and you guys don't like double-posters.

Anyways, I was trying to see if I could change the GHZ boss ball animation, but I found out the ball has multiple frames not used. This may be a leftover from when you could ride it, but does anyone know how to make the ball use all these frames ingame? In other words, how do I change the ball's animation?

BTW: The reason I double posted is because if I didn't, I'd need to add all of this stuff to the previous post, and I already edited it before to put in more content. Also, if nobody responded to that, and I edited it more and more to say what I need to instead of making a new post, it'd eventually become a MEGAPOST due to long length.

Didn't you already ask that question in the general questions thread? I can understand why you'd want to add another post, to get some more attention for your question, but you did ask it in the proper location beforehand...

Also, to review the hack so far...

I played up to Casino Crisis Zone, and this hack just keeps getting better and better!

    some issues:

The SLZ edit (forgot the name) has a death pit immediately before the boss arena where I always end up losing a life. Try putting a warning, like an enemy or a sign that says slow, or just a solid obstacle that you can jump over, so that this death pit doesn't continue to be a nuisance (I understand that it is a crucial part of the boss)

Also, in the beginning of Casino Crisis, I found this an area with a curve that isn't flush with the wall, leaving an awkward edge. I know for a fact that SYZ has a chunk that would fit much better here (it looks similar, but it fades into the walls around it, rather then leaving the aforementioned issues)

The ported S3K level end theme sounds awful. I know your not satisfied with it, either, but I think everyone would appreciate it if this was fixed quickly.

I got a game over at the casino crisis zone boss, and when the sega screen came back up, several garbled tiles appeared at the bottom of the screen

Once, again Crystal Cave is my favorite zone in the hack, but it still has very incomplete leftovers from labyrinth zone in acts 2-3 (although I was able to beat act 2 without debug mode, somehow :p) also, you removed drowning. I'm not sure how I feel about that...

    1. I put a ring box there to stop the player, but maybe I could add something else to stop the player, too.

    2. I THINK I know what you're talking about, but I'm not certain. Maybe add a screenshot of the area?

    3. I know it's awful, but I didn't want to leave it the same as Sonic 1. I'll try to find something that's not so horrible (if I can find another one that is).

    4. I know about the Sega screen. I just don't know how to fix it. Darn, I was hoping nobody would notice.

    5. I haven't started those acts, and I'm still working on the objects for Act 1 near the end. As for the drowning, I didn't get rid of it, I just changed the time limit to be more than 30 seconds, since that annoyed Sonic 1 players. I changed it to be around 1:10. Before the countdown, you should here the shield noise 3 times.

Also, the reason I re-asked the question is because it seems there aren't many people in that forum.

    EDIT: You mean this?:
