[IMG]This is my first ROM hack where I completely re-make levels from the original. In the future I plan to add new textures to sonic and make many more levels. So far I have made level one from green hill. And you all probably have noticed that I have not named this ROM hack, well I want you all to name it! Keep it appropriate though. I will have you all know that I have taken the main path so I could keep as many secrets "secret as possible. But enough reading this paragraph GET A LOAD OF GET A LOAD OF GET A LOAD OF THIS!!

Here is a download link so you all can play the first level!

Let me know what you all think about this!

None of your image links work. Please fix that.

Until then, I'll make some screenshots to let the people here get an impression. I think the pictures speak for themselves.

And since you asked for a name, I'd title it "Sonic 1: I-Discovered-How-To-Fix-The-Checksum-In-ESEII-After-I-Made-My-First-Hack-In-It Edition". Because it reminds me on my first hack, which was basically the same thing.

I have a question. Was this made in Esrael Sonic Editor? If so, you may want to upgrade to a disassembly, which you can get here.

I highly recommend getting the ASM68k version of Project Sonic 1: Two-Eight as it has 128x128 chunks. That along with SonLvl

and other programs would really help.

The hack in it's current state just seems so simple. There isn't much to show off nor is there anything changed past the first act. I really think you should work more on your hack before showing it off. I mean... Only the layouts are changed. And even that needs work.

I wouldn't be too eager to release something that is barely done. In the very least finish up the rest of Green Hill.

The screenshots make it look like that one time I got my old-as-fuck Mega Drive to work and spent an entire night dicking around in Debug Mode. (Read; bad)

Maybe you should try SonED2 instead of ESE...

To answer Bakayote's question, I am  using sonLVL to edit the game. I am also new to this so cut me some slack. If anyone can teach me it would be greatly appreciated. And im sorry the screenshots don't work, when I drag and drop them it says it is too big or too small. I plan on finishing green hill sometime soon too! ;)

I really suggest you to study the original games and try to think why they did thing A or thing B, or why they didnt do thing C. This helps you to make layouts that are reasonable and not dickish or badly designed, as you can analyze what good design is. Another thing you can do, is read this; it helps you avoid the common mistakes splattered all around this hack.

What bad choices did I make in terms of level design?

Not to be mean but I'd rather play my hack called Sonic 1: Wheres Sonic. The level design, how do I explain. The amount of badniks in the beginning made me go "wat" because there was so many. Improve on it and I'll check out. P.S. I know this was mentioned before but those screenshot links just take to me to the front page of the website. Use imgur or something.

That's good. Now people can take a look at what they are gonna play. I'm guessing you used my idea of imgur. I guess that other site was just broken and they need to fix it.

I was actually considering up voting your post, because it does include somewhat legitimate concerns with the hack, but your edit is completely immature. Now I'm down voting it. Sorry, but the edit was completely unnecessary, and very rude.

Anyways, here's some pros and cons about the hack:

    1. Near the beginning of the level, after the first loop, and on the upper path accessed via the platforms, a crabmeat can walk through a rock with a red spring on it. It looks very odd, and makes it much more difficult to kill
    2. That exact same spring from before is part of a Sonic CD style spring trap thingy... I hate these, and they have no purpose other then to be annoying here. Try removing the backward facing spring and rock, and it will be much better.
    3. After that, through the breakable walls, are 3 buzz bombers, all together. This is a very unfair move for act 1 of Green Hill Zone.
    4. Your using the Boss swing ball object! Cool! Most people never figure out how to use it, I've only seen a few hacks that utilize it. (and yes, I know it's just the SBZ object)
    5. Death Pits. In Zone 1. REMOVE THEM. ALL OF THEM. Never include a death pit in zone 1; it's very cheap in a fast paced zone; Green Hill, Emerald Hill, and Angel Island have no intentionally placed death pits in them, and even other fast paced zones, like Chemical Plant, Hydrocity, and Aquatic Ruins have very few death pits. Chemical Plant even covers one up with a moving stairway object.
    6. Take a good, long look at the third picture Selbi posted. It has so many object placement issues it's almost despicable. For starters, there should be actual chunks at the bottom, not platforms. That rock is broken looking, and should be pushed back to the main land or completely removed. Finally, the chunk the falling object is attached to is the wrong one. Look carefully at the original Green Hill Zone layouts to see what should be used here.
    7. You need to use Obj44 to cover up walls that should be shaded. Again, scrutinize Green Hills' original layouts to see how to use it properly.
    8. Don't put crab meats in S-loops. In fact, don't put anything in S-loops except for rings and, if you want to be creative, monitors. Anything else looks ugly and can be incredibly cheap.
    9. Okay, I get that the ending after the S-loop has badly placed enemies but seeing what he was trying to do, it's actually kind of smart. Try removing a few of the buzz bombers near the end, though, it does look a little odd, and the ones at the bottom of the stack can't be hit, and thus are pointless.
And from there, it's just default Sonic 1. Fix those things, and keep them in mind when you make your other layouts. Hope this helped :3

The reason I downvoted your comment was because I felt it was badly done, was hard to understand and really lacked any substance further than self promotion. There is no real need to get angry, rather take a note and think what you are writing more next time. Its not like a single dislike means much, at least not enough to get angry about it.
