Your title screen is definitely possible, but the animation does cause a bit of a predicament: if you want to avoid duplicate art for the dragon and the 'SONIC' text, then the ring would go on one plane, while the dragon/text would go on the other. That would mean, however, that you couldn't have an animated/scrolling background, since it would go on the same plane as the ring. Something would have to be 'baked-on' to the other, be it the background+ring, or ring+dragon+text. You could just settle for a black background, like in the GIF, but I don't know if that's what you're going for. Also, on a side note, remember to fix the 'E's in 'HEDGEHOG'; they're inconsistent. Oh no, did I just nitpick about the title screen, which doesn't have any effect on the actual game, and therefore isn't allowed to be commented on?

Or you could change it and have a normal ring as an object, but then you would have to really change all of it. I assume there won't be enough space for sonic to be on the titlescreen. If there was, I was going to say that the ring could act like the title emblem in which, animating it wouldn't be needed.

Talk about blast from the past, it has been a long time since I last played this hack when it was still in the early stages of development and to see it evolve over the years was great to see.

The level design was really fun to travel through although there were a few flow stoppers such as areas where there is a short stretch of road where I instinctively spin dash only to halted by spikes or any other object, the music was also nice to listen to and I even like the fact that there were Special stage versions of these songs as well as invincibility versions, that's a great attention to detail.

Speaking of special stages I am a bit mixed on them in terms of the controls, they feel a bit awkward (turning the stage instead of Sonic) but nothing that I can't handle, I would preferred the stock special stage controls but it's up to you what you want to do with it.

I love the tweaks you gave to Sonic, they all made me grow a big smile especially the new shields and the fact that you can float upwards in water. May I suggest removing the roll jump air control lock mechanic, I found out how to do this by reading a post by Clownacy on Retro (So credit to him for this little info)

Look for "Sonic_ChgJumpDir" then comment out or delete the following lines:

    Code:
            btst #4,$22(a0)
            bne.s Obj01_ResetScr2

Build the ROM and now Sonic doesn't lose air control after roll jumping/Spin dash jumping, the reason I suggest this is because while playing in Hydro Base Zone I ended up spin dash jumping and then using the new floating mechanic but since the air control lock was still in place I couldn't turn left or right which crippled this new move a bit.

For the most part the art was really nice to look at although there were cases where I stumbled about due to some of the art blending in together or certain art assets looking out of place/unfinished, Deep Castle might be the weakest level in the hack from a visual standpoint, the palette looks like it's unfinished and a lot of things blend together but other than that the art is heading into a great direction.

Overall I really enjoyed this hack and it was a treat to play it again after so many years, with some more work and extra polish this could turn out to be one of the best hacks out there. I am looking forward to future updates. As for the name change how about calling this hack Sonic: Spirit of the Dragon?

    Thanks for the feedback.

I understand some parts of the mod are unpolished, especially the levels I did in 2011. I was hesitant on making a release at all, but it's bothered me that I have made a past release, and returned to working on it without a place to get feedback. The constructive criticism has been helpful so far. I have high expectations for the final version of this mod, and my standards have changed since I first started this project. Melon Park Zone most closely reflects my current standards since it's the most recent. However the earlier zones do not yet meet this standard, but they will definitely be redone.

I thought "Dragon Edition" because of my user name, not because there are dragons in the game (yet). The mod focuses on creating my own original levels rather than following a theme, so I wanted a title that says "my version". I understand "Edition" is also used in a number of other hacks as well. I don't mind that much though. Though the goal is to overhaul all zones, it's still a modification of Sonic the Hedgehog.

I've gotten mixed opinions on the special stages. I want to make them fun and challenging, but not frustrating. I'll pay close attention to the special stages to determine what is good and bad.

Wow, you really are taking this seriously, aren't you. I won't lie, I was going to do something funny, like, make a fully constructive post about the content of the hack, but then with a twist, interrupt it mid-way, and make a sarcastic comment about "how I should only pick one thing I dislike about it, and make an 8 word comment about that instead. And if anyone has a problem with that, I'll deliberately "look" for ways to justify my actions, and then failing that, do it properly, and make a facetious response on the end". But decided not to sink to that level d=

If you want my honest opinion here, and this is all jokes aside, your post there was fine (apart from the facetious response on the end of course), see? You can do it when you want to. Myself and the rest of the staff would appreciate it if you did it more often. In addition, it is nothing personal, others are also getting their asses kicked. I am just cracking down on these silly little things, after speaking to some of the long-term respected members, it seems they are driven away by the nasty arrogant several letter posts, often those that try to include inappropriate humour. I know it might seem like I'm being a dick right now, but that is the cost of being a staff member. I've been a staff member before, others just like you have tried to justify their stupidity, and have failed. Like I said before, it really is nothing personal. I would appreciate it if you didn't mock me next time of course, it really doesn't make the situation any better as I have to protest and retaliate.

If you (or anyone else) have any further problems regarding the matter, then feel free to drop me a PM. Any further discussion about it on the board will be trashed following a warning and possible temporary suspension, this includes joking or facetious content of course~

So I decided to give this a go, and I can honestly say I was really enjoying this. I saw new features that I haven’t seen in any other hack to date. Keep up the good work!

OK I am quite disappointed in the crystal use in the special stages. Too many to even get to enjoy it. I like the fact that you go for a gimmick however. Tho it's hard to control and is not that funny to do. Anyway This hack is good. The special stages is not.

The special stages in my opinion, don't give you enough time to get used to the mechanics, have too small pathways, and god damn annoying bumpers in places where its almost impossible to avoid them. The difficulty starts at high and quickly ramps to infinity. Also the R blocks confuse you out so much when they are instant. Maybe you can do what Sonic Erazor did, and have it rotate, but freeze the player in midair. This way they have a bit of time to see whats ahead before being dropped in.

Aslo here is that video I promised:

One thing that bothers me about the special stages is the inverted controls. Do you think you can add an option to change it?

I actually learned of this hack through RHS' video.

This is really one to watch out for.
The hubworld palette looks a bit bland but the layout is very well done; where you placed the rings etc.
Your art... oh god your art. You remind me of the great Rika Chou. Your style often resembles his, and that is a good thing. You clearly got talent for this.
Those new shields are very original. I especially like the atomic one. That also reminds me that I really like those atomic rings which seem to glow with radioactivity. Please keep those in.
The new music that is already present here and there is enjoyable. Especially the first zone has really fitting music to my taste.

The special stages have a fresh feel to them and you added new mechanics. Just, please don't use those reverse pads so much. It drives me insane and is disorientating. Especially one stage was really bad with this.

I noticed some bugs, like wrong tiles on some foreground scenery after the Starlight boss, wrong tiles on harpoons at the Labyrinth boss and a flickering end-of-level sign post pole in an early level. Should not be hard for you to fix.

I really enjoyed your work from what I've seen so far. You got a fan +1.

Also, it's your work, so you should name it what you want. Misadventure is fine imo.

Thanks for everyone who provided feedback about the special stages. There have been some big changes to them, especially a new dash move that replaces the jump ability.

The special stages can still be completed with minimal usage of this move, but I wanted to demonstrate this move specifically, and that it can be used as an alternative method of movement. It feels more responsive than before, so hopefully it satisfies the difficult controls that was most voted in the poll. And if one movement style is hard, players can try the other.

Hopefully I can get this out soon, since my release date goal for V3.1 is supposed to be...tomorrow. And I'm still trying to figure out how to import planes (does anyone have good tutorials?)

That's actually an unused sprite from the original game.

BTW I would recommend changing the sound effect. The current one has a tendency to get annoying after a while. Also it is somewhat confusing, considering the fact that the same sound effect plays when you get a Chaos Emerald or touch a "GOAL" block

I think everyone her knows that.
But anyways that's a really creative idea to have those king of stages. I also remeber back in those days when the link for your hack got removed and then after years of searching I finally found it.

DevEd responded to LordXernom, who interpreted the post as implying Dragon Wolf Leo created the sprite himself. So... maybe not everyone knows that.

But I know this is unused sprite... :/ I mean, this looks a lot cuter that's why I said "made" - it wasn't literally meaning of my post! I mean Dragon made this game a lot cuter with this sprite. :D

I've played this game a long time ago, and I have to say it has had major improvements past then. The graphics and levels are top-notch, the shields are unique (my favorite being what I call the Atom Shield), the music is awesome, and this:

The sunset color palette on Green Hill AND Sonic give off a really nice vibe. I can't wait to see this hack progress further!

Version 3.1 is here. The download is in the original post.

We now have a shiny new title screen, and the name has been officially renamed to Dragon Edition.

Special stage mechanics are also revised to have better control and less awkwardness. Additionally, the rotation of the special stage has been inversed from the previous build. Though if you prefer the previous rotation, there's also an option to switch it back to inversed.

Acts 2 and 3 of Melon Park Zone, and Deep Castle Zone's Special Stage are also complete. SRAM has also been enabled, and emeralds are now saved.

    Full Changelog:
    [Levels]
    - Completed MPZ2, MPZ3, DCZSS.
    - Minor tweaks to GHZ, HBZ1, HBZ2, HBZ3, MPZ1.
    - Tweaks to all special stages.

    [Changes]
    - Renamed to Sonic the Hedgehog Dragon Edition.
    - New title screen.
    - New menu options added to start screen.
    - SRAM support added (tutorial by Selbi).
    - Emeralds are now saved to SRAM.
    - Added cycling shield monitor.
    - Fire shield can destroy badniks when running at high speed even if not rolling.
    - Atomic shield keeps Sonic rolling when quick enough.
    - Falling platform delay slightly increased.
    - Removed roll jump air control lock (tutorial by Clownacy).
    - Set a maximum speed to buzz bomber bullets.
    - Red panda fire now slides instead of bounces.
    - Implemented optimized KosDec and NemDec (tutorial by vladikcomper).
    - Special stage rotation is now smooth.
    - Jump in special stage has been replaced with an upwards dash.
    - Arrow Blocks are no longer triggered when collided moving upward.
    - R Blocks now smoothly and straightly rotate the stage.
    - Arrow Blocks now straightly rotate the stage.
    - Added option to inverse rotation.

    [Fixes]
    - Fixed more explosions sometimes causing sound errors.
    - Applied various bug fixes for Sonic 1 sound driver (tutorials by ValleyBell and vladikcomper).
    - Special stage results screen shows appropriate text.
    - Fixed GHZ ball art overwriting art in some levels.
    - Improved collision checks with breakable walls when Sonic is rolling midair.

    [Music]
    - Title (Redone)

Version 3.2 will focus on redoing Hydro Base Zone, and Version 3.3 will focus on redoing Deep Castle Zone.

Well, all I can say about this is that you left me speechless. Especially with the title screen. Call me exaggerated, but when I saw the title screen animated like that, I was like "No kidding, this is bloody amazing!". The level layouts are pretty good too. Keep going, good sir. You are taking the right path!!!

EDIT: Forgot to mention something. If there is something I would change, it's those "bees" replacing the buzzbombers. At least, the art. They don't look like badniks, not even robots. Since you are going to remake both Hydro Base and Deep Castle, why not doing that too? (It's a suggestion)

I agree with AbyssalLeopald. But I noticed a few problems:

    - when I spindashing in Hydro Base Zone and meet a few loops, Sonic is stopping rolling - I think it's a collision detection issues...
    - The black color of background in MPZ3 boss area shares the same color as Boss black color and when you hit boss, the entire background is blinking white and it kinda hurt my eyes.
    - a few broken solids in foreground of Hydro base Zone.

And I think that's all, I really like the Sandopolis remix in special stage of MPZ. :D It's so unique and my first reaction was WTF, this sounds so unique and nice. :D ;) Keep working! ;)
