Wanted to give everyone an update, Sik converted the xgmplayer c code into pure assembly. However for some reason the code doesn't seem to work as the game has gone completely mute. I made a test case of the title screen, game and pause states and removed everything else. Pressing start at the title screen should start a game with the song Twangy Thing by ComradeOj. Pressing start in the middle of the game pauses it. After the song finishes it goes back to the title screen until start is pressed for another go.

Solution: Use SMPS or GEMS ;)
No but seriously, I do not think anyone here in any way is familiar with it, would suggest sticking to asking about it on SpritesMind.

Thanks, but didn't you need a license back then to use the GEMS driver? I tried contacting Randel Reiss the copyright holder about using it in homebrews but, so far I haven't yet received a response. Also do you need a license to use AMPS and what are the development tools like for creating a simple song?

Unless you are out to sell your game for profit, I do not think anyone at this point gives a damn anyway. The music editing tools for SMPS are fairly primitive and at best they just about work, but you can create music in ASM with help of tools to finetune your music, its quite simple actually.
