While I absolutely love the fact that SEGA is finally allowing ROM hacks officially, I don't think this new hub is a viable option for the contest.
I only say this because I'm pretty sure, due to the hub being branded under the Mega Drive Classics lineup, that it would require the user to have purchased Sonic 1, 2, and 3K in order to play their respective hacks. I don't know about you guys, but I'd rather not purchase ANOTHER copy of the MD games just to do something I can do for free now.

Thanks, Blazer!! I appreciate the help!

Spoken like a true pirate! Why buy anything when you can do it for free right now? I've bought Sonic Adventure 2 at least three times. I have the *.ISO, but I still bought it on Steam. TANSTAAFL

Well with SA2, you can use mods on the PC version, not so much the DC/GC versions.

I think you misunderstand my meaning.
ROM hacks, in essence, are free. I don't need to own something in order to play them.
I also own six copies of Sonic 1. (Genesis, 3DS, Wii, Mobile, PS2, DS)
I don't think I should have to buy Sonic 1 again in order to do something I can do and have been doing perfectly fine for a while now.

I'm not saying, "Why buy anything when you can do it for free right now?", because I can play ROM hacks just fine without having the need to purchase just another copy of Sonic 1 that, frankly, I wouldn't be playing.

and for the record I don't pirate :T

Well if I have to rebuy the classics once again I will be pissed. However I like the fact that they do "care" about fanprojects/hacking. It seems interesting.

This is now the thread for discussion about SEGA MegaDrive Classics! I tried to move everything to a new thread on a board I'm unfamiliar with. I nuked a post. It was my own. Whoops. I don't care to rewrite it.

It was basically saying that I agree with CaveQuest and was mostly playing devil's advocate. I was trying to speak from the standpoint of a company. Sega isn't going to make this program without any plans to monetise it. How they do that, however, I guess we'll have to wait and see...

Does this mean I can finally play as the Pringle Guy on Sonic 1 and Sega will allow it?

I hate SEGA in general, and I would really love the punish them somehow for their ignorance.

I feel this is a wonderful opportunity that they have given me. All I need to do now, is make a ROM that breaks the emulator really badly, but remains playable on all other emulators and hardware. Or, put a fuck load of copyrighted material in that does not appear right away, such that it can only occur under specific unknown circumstances leading to those operating this "emulator" to be none the wiser, and simply wait for shit to hit the fan.

...I hope it's not just me who's feeling vindictive here?

EDIT: Hell, let's put porn in the ROMs, and send that up?

Nobody really knows what's going to happen yet. Best case, we are free to put all ROM hacks ever made up. Worst case, we will get a "dev kit" to make our "own Sonic games". I personally don't think it's going to be either of these per se, but I feel it's tending more toward the latter.

(For those slightly confused about what we're talking about in the vague OP, Sega is releasing a Hub and support to mod Genesis games re-released on Steam via Steam Workshop. Polygon article, Wikipedia article)

I somehow doubt it will allow full rom-hacks. (Do we even know if the Genesis games on steams are wrapped in a Genesis emulator?). From the quote above, sounds like Sega will be allowing certain aspects of games to be modified on a per-game basis (hence the need to "update (your) games" with upcoming Steam patches).

Current Sega Mega Drive Classics works using an emulator and ROMs packaged in a proprietary packing format. It's a combination of compression and obfuscation. We have no current information on whether the format will change when the Hub update is pushed. Any and all information regarding what we'll be able to do with SteamWorks mods and so forth are just speculation, unfortunately.

This post from Donnie on Retro says they specifically said it wasn't going to ship with any editing tools, instead relying on existing fan-made tools, so presumably hacks that already exist are fair game to put on the workshop.

As a ROM hacker of other titles in the Genesis and Megadrive library that are not a part of the Sonic franchise (NHL Hockey '92 to '94, World Cup Italia '90, NBA Live '96, NHL '98, and other Genesis/Megadrive Sports titles that were made for the console, among a few specific others), I would like to know more on what exactly I would be able to do with the Classics Hub following its release, updates, and revisions, the subject on the allowance of ROM hacks truly does spike my curiosity just as much as the rest of us here.
From what we currently know, will this strictly be for titles that are available on Steam, or will there possibly be a chance for any to all ROM hacks and Megadrive Homebrew works to have fair game on the Classic Hub?

Seriously, being able to play titles such as Project MD (2012), Hard Wired, The Chaos Layer (in the event that it ever gets finished), Pier Solar and the Great Architects, and MIAA Women's Hockey 2015 truly would be a rather positive thing for the Classic Hub, it would open up the audiences to a new line of titles made by the fans of the console and get our own names out there in a rather good way.
Wishfully, they will allow for non~Steam Genesis and Megadrive works to be available on there, it truly would serve them well and encourage us to actually work on more projects, the possibilities truly would become endless from doing so.

Looking at all this, it seems like sega's finally taking a step in the right direction, and I'm excited to see what happens. It makes sense to monetize it the way they are (despite the annoyingness of it all), but if it let's us upload our existing rom hacks and get official recognition for them, I'll be very happy indeed...

provided sega doesn't fuck up like always :p

OK, is it just me, or is the emulator they made there super choppy?

I couldn't even play Sonic 1 normally because of the extremely limited framerate. Did anyone else get this lag?

I did get it while sharing screens on Skype, the framerate would go even down to 40fps, but other than that its pretty good
