As we all know, Bubsy in Claws Encounters of the Furred Kind is the greatest game for the genesis, and the best game of all time. Bubsys' witty (and not frustratingly annoying) puns alongside his totally amazing (and definitely not broken) gameplay make him one of the most universally loved characters of all time. Surely, one day, another company will get the power to bring him up again (perhaps Sega can buy the rights and save their name), but for now, it is up to us, the gamers to bring his wonderfulness back into the spotlight. So, with out further ado, Bubsy in Sonic 2!

Okay, okay, all jokes aside, this is a still an attempt at making a rather faithful Bubsy from scratch. His gliding (which works by holding A, like in Bubsy 1 for the genesis), inability to take a hit, his stupid fall damage, even his marioesque jumping and one of his dying animations; they're all in here, and they're all pretty hilarious. To top it off, these features alone make Sonic 2 just as impossible to enjoy as any of games in the 2D Bubsy Series; it's so ridiculously, stupidly hard, that I even rage quited out of playing through the whole thing for playtesting reasons. Here's a few tips and tidbits to make things easier on you (as the hack itself won't give you any chances).

    PLAYTESTED LEVELS

I know through painful playtesting that these can be beaten

    • Empurrald Hill
    • Chemicat Pant
    • Aclawtick Ruin
    • Clawsino Night (BTW this level is basically Bubsy Hell)
    • Hill Tail
    • Wing Furtress (at least up to the boss)
    • Chicken Egg (In theory, I haven't actually beaten this, but I know the boss can be killed, with patience)
    PLAYING ADVICE

You'd better read these; I learned this from building the code and dying many, many times

    • Do not jump in loops; this will result in death by fall damage
    • Bubsys' glide is the only thing he can do that Sonic can't; abuse it whenever it's appropriate. It can be used to kill enemies with ease, break your fall to prevent fall damage, and makes it so that bumpers can't knock you around (more on that later)
    • Go a bit slower then you would with sonic. Keep this in mind in Chemical Plant and Emerald Hill, as those levels surprisingly have a lot of dick moves based on speed.
    • Worship Shields. They are the only thing that can stand between you and yet another stupid death.
    • Fall damage is the worst kind of damage; it will instakill, regardless of shield, invincibility, etc.
    • Fall damage is also based on how fast you fall, not how far; getting launched downward super quickly is a death blow (Highly noticeable in Casino Night)
    • If you feel like skipping levels, the level select replaces the 2-player mode screen, and is available through the main menu and options screen. If you need to skip even just one level, I recommend skipping one of the levels not mentioned in the Playtested Levels List, or Casino Night; that one pretty much sucks the fun out of everything (the bumpers and constant flinging make dying by fall damage inevitable).

I really like this. I quite liked the first Bubsy game for the Megadrive, and this is a nice idea. I especially like the animations and their use. The level names also seem to follow the terrible pun trope of the original game, so good job.

The fall damage is incredibly over exaggerated, though. It's nowhere near as bad as this in the original game. It's also based on height, not speed, so I do not understand the reason behind the way you have done it. The gliding feels a little awkward, as well. It's mostly accurate, but it feels a bit simple. Finally, Bubsy's pop-in on the title screen freaked me out the first time, there. Was not expecting that.

I hope you continue on with this. I'd like the whole game to be completable, but that's me.

Also, a simple idea: replace the SEGA chant with one of Bubsy's many phrases. Even the first level one would work.

    Yes. YES. YEEES!

This, my good man, is a character hack I can easily say that I expected to happen sometime. Considering this is from scratch, I will say that I find this to be very faithful and impressive. The puns are spot on, and... yeah!

Now, I do have some problems and nitpicks here and there:

    • Bubsy's life counter text looks really stretched out.
    • When looking down, he shifts over to the left greatly.
    • When looking up, a part of his foot disappears.
    • The 'B' in Bubsy during the End of Act card is very, VERY poorly drawn.
    • If you let Bubsy's waiting animation play, and then step forward, he disappears for a moment.
    • On the title screen, Bubsy's animation is very finicky.
    • The 'BUBSY IN' text during the into is off center.
    • As DA Garden mentioned, the fall damaged is WAAAY too over exaggerated.
Besides these things, I really do like this hack and hope you continue working on it!

To conclude, have some suggestions! :)

    • Make Rings into Yarnballs.
    • Have Bubsy talk. A LOT.
    • When holding the C button, have it so you can make the camera shift like in the original.
    • Have Bubsy knock on the screen when waiting.
    • Fix Bubsy's palette, and remedy any problems with the palette by importing KiS2 art.
EDIT: Fixed the accidental grammar error.

You just reminded me of Knux5...  I still recall one of the hoaxes:

It's nice to see it come to life!

...having said that, it would be more enjoyable if I didn't die from falling after hitting a spring... >=%

The fall damage was built using velocity because it was much easier; having it based on fall height would mean I needed to record the actual height he fell from, then compare; I'm not sure where I'd record that first height. As for the gliding, I actually modified it a bit to match the falling physics of the original, although the way he moves left and right isn't quite the same.

As for the Sega chant idea, that of course came to my mind too but I don't know how to work with the DAC D:

I appreciate the C&C, but I don't really know how to fix over half of these things; as for the other possible implementations, I just don't really feel like adding them, but they're great ideas.

With that said, I probably would have released this later if I didn't have a meticulous desire to playtest every tiny little change I make, and then play more in between; I'm all Bubsied out, I'm afraid. I've gotten sick and tired of playing as him :V As this was intended as a side project to distract me from my main one for a few days, I never intended to work on it too long, and probably won't get back to it for some time. Actually, if any of you really want to work on it yourselves, PM me, maybe it can be a group project or something of the sort.

I didn't ever expect this to be a thing, but it's a thing.

Honestly, it's a great hack and certainly made me chuckle but it has it's bugs, like in the title screen Bubsy's graphics are glitched. It actually adds a layer of difficulty and is great fun to challenge yourself with.

This is just a little update to point out things you might not have known:

    1. Razor Zenon has proven here that it is in fact possible to beat the entire game without cheating or using ridiculous TAS maneuvers. Doesn't make it any less hard, but at least there's a glimmer of hope

    2. This hack is far from dead; TheStoneBanana has offered to continue development, and is likely making it more Bubsyish as we speak :p Feel free to continue critiquing for his sake.

But such a feature, as a flight from the original Bubsy game?

Hahahah, it's kinda like a Jump high and touch the floor to die. lol
I like it a lot. I confess I never expected to see Bubsy in a Sonic game acting like in its original game. The idea of having Bubsy in a Sonic game is really interesting, it's funny a lot and it's really cool. But this hack is kinda impossible to complete. Everytime I jump on any spring, I'll die with no chance of staying alive. As a suggestion of a improvement/fix to it, you should allow the A button to be pressed anytime in the air, so the spring death will only happen if the character don't perform the gliding action. And I'm not sure if it was my impression, but the distance between the top and the floor to make Bubsy to die seems to be configured to be kinda short. Anyway, you're making a impressive job!

hey, to be fair, the speed thing is more realistic.

in all seriousness though, I love this. my only real gripe is the gliding. I mean, I haven't played bubsy recently so all I can say is that it's stiff. You could've just given him Knuckles' gliding. I was also sad to see that bubsy isn't in the special stages when you get the 50 rings and jump through a checkpoint, only tails. (I guess now I know who you based bubsy off of. :p)

here's a tip for survival: no matter how fast you fall, you won't die if you land on what's considered an object. So if you land from a fast fall onto a monitor, it won't register as a death.

The gliding isn't quite accurate to the Bubsy series; while the falling rate was made to be close to the original, the way he moves left and right does not; the Bubsy games don't force you to go forward (for example, you can push him to glide left or right, or not touch the D-pad and let him "glide in place"). I actually built Bubsy off of Sonic, and forced tails to appear in the special stage because that made a teensy bit more sense then Sonic popping up there (and I can't make my own sprites :( ). As for the falling on objects tip, that's technically a bug, and I could've easily fixed it, but I guess that never happened :p

I really thought you made him off of tails not only because of the special stage, but this:

oh well at the end of the day, who gives a shit? can't wait to see more of this.

also, keep the object bug. It feels absolutely necessary to survive at times.

This is amazing. Even better that it's in Sonic 2 which I know very well. This is like an entirely new game. The fall damage is kicking my ass but the challenge has been accepted!

Hi all!   I thought it was hilarious when I found out about this hack on YouTube today and even featured a quick article about this on the Bubsy Bobcat fan Blog:

    http://atariage.com/forums/blog/234/entry-12049-cruizin-youtube-may-2015-bonus-bubsy-in-sonic-2/

As a player of Bubsy I have some feedback on the controls.  As a parody of Bubsy and how much he dies, this is hilarious.

If we want to experience how Bubsy would really do in the Sonic game maps, a few changes need to be made:

    1) The falling damage is not this extreme.  To best show this, check out this video set 30 seconds into the video.  From that upper table in the Alice in Wonderland stages (Fractured Furry Tales) I have on many occasions dropped from that table to the ground with no problems.  (even missing the small blue cup in between).   This video will give you an idea of how far that is and how forgiving the fall detection really is.

Here is another good example of a long drop that can be survived at 23 minutes into this video:

    No glide involved.

    2)  GLIDE:   If it is possible to hack it in, Glide is simply that.  You glide.  You can jump up and simply glide down, or if you operate the controls you glide in the direction (left or right) that you control while gliding down.   This gives immense control when you learn the knack of it.   For starters it gives someone a bit of a parachute when you have to long way to drop.  Most of the problems in this current hack would be solved if the glide would allow a slow descent.

At the moment, as best I could tell in emulation, hitting the glide button meant while you were in a jump you could hit glide and shoot with great speed in the direction you were going.  There is a bit more to the glide than that.

    3) JUMPS:  Bubsy actually has two jumps 1) a small jump, usually attained when you hit the glide button from the ground level 2) a dedicated jump button which jumps a bit higher.

Most Bubsy gamers will hit the high jump button and then glide from there.

So if those above modfications are possible that would be awesome.  At the very least, allow the drop and death formula to be quite a lot more forgiving.

I have to admit this hack is too accurate it hurts me. I though hate the thought of this hack being in existance. This is gonna be a hellride. Sorry for bumping but I wanna just let you know my opinions.

This hack makes Sonic 2 much harder but more fun imo. Cause I keep smiling each time I die of falling damage.
