Looks good, dude. My only complaint would be the badniks don't fit, but hey, that's just me. :)

Hey Hezon, you really have talent in making art. Good Work. My question is do you plan on making new background art as well.

While I do like the way you touched it up and made it look fresh, I'm a strong opposer of strictly blocky zones though. Get some slopes in there, this isn't an NES platformer! Also don't just make an alternative layout of labyrinth, add cool gimmicks aside from the slowmotion water and you could have something pretty nice there.

One thing of concern, I've noticed that as soon you have ground that is 16 pixels thick or less, you're prone to simply falling through it when coming jumping down from a larger height so unless all of the falls are small I'd recommend making it thicker. I've even noticed this in EH where I've fallen straight to my death through the hanging bridges :p.

Here's a video of it in action:

(If the embed isn't working, try clicking

    .)

EDIT: As you can see from the video, I haven't modified the actual level layout, just the chunks and the BG.

I like how the level feels like a completely different zone, even though it's exactly the same old Labyrinth Zone. Very nice touch there!

I just hope you're going to get different music. Hidden Palace has been done so often by now it's actually a little annoying. Also, that first jump seems awfully overpowered.

I noticed, his double jump has the same bug my first one had that was made for Shadow, did you add a Status check if Sonic is underwater, to have a smaller jumping Y speed, its a little overpowered without it?

btst #6,status(a0) ; Test if underwater
    beq.s Shadow_DoubleJump_Rts
move.w #-1150,Y_vel(a0) ; set lower jump speed if under

    Edit: Example

    Thank you.

How would you feel about me using

    song?

Yes, I am aware of this. I tried using Joenick's fix (after modifying it to work with my code), but it doesn't seem to be working.

Here is my current double-jump code (including the "fix") (also note that this code is actually part of the jumpdash code, hence the references to the jumpdash):

    Code:
    cmpi.b #btnA,(v_jpadpress1).w ; is A pressed?
bne.s JumpDash ; if not, branch
    sfx sfx_Jump
move.b #$8,d0 ; double jump velocity (while above water)
btst #6,status(a0) ; is Sonic underwater?
    beq.s @continue ; if not, branch
move.w #$4,(d0) ; set lower jump speed if under
    @continue:
    neg.w d0
    move.b d0,obVelY(a0) ; make Sonic jump
    move.b #id_DoubleJump,obAnim(a0) ; use "double jump" animation
    btst #3,obStatus(a0)
    jmp JD_End

Well the double jump I have is for Sonic 2, although this shouldn't be much different. Did you make sure #6, status is the underwater status in Sonic 1?

Edit: for a reverence look in the Sonic jumping routine, they have the check for different speed of jump when underwater in there. Also in the jump height routine.

    Very Good!

Will it be used for a S3&K hack?

Not bad, if that's snow on the mountains, will the level be a snow level?. I noticed you used a part of the AIZ BG so if its for that then I'm interested to see an edit of AIZ's FG.

Probably not the place to say/ask this, but I kinda wanna see a steampunk-style hack, like maybe with the characters' ancestors. Eggman would use steam-powered machines and the badniks would be clockwork-style, though one would wonder what the purpose of the Capsules at the end of the levels? If anyone wants to do something with it go ahead. I mostly just said something on the off chance someone was thinking about it and wasn't sure if anyone else would wanna see it.

    No.

That's more along the lines of the pre-WW2 era of animation (Betty Boop, early Disney, et al), when what I'm suggesting is steampunk.

Though you probably saw the cartoon's 1930s aesthetic and went from there to Bioshock and though Bioshock was steampunk when it's actually considered dieselpunk.

And that cartoon was WAY too short.

Relax, I was just yanking your chain.

On a serious note, I suppose the closest thing to what you'd be after, might be Rocket Knight Adventures. The enemy pigs tend to have machinery and a city that's sort of, steam powered industrial from old time. Kinda like wild wild west, I guess:

It would certainly be an interesting concept, especially given new and unique gimmicks thrown in to boot.

I actually really like Rocket Knight Adventures (I wouldn't say "love" and a part of me hates that I don't say "love").

I also kinda figured you were just yanking my chain. Or at least mocking me.

But I was thinking taking cues from the likes of bands like Abney Park and Vernian Process, as well as "Dirigible Days" (web series), Bioshock Infinite, Howl's Moving Castle and the like.

And I'm just gonna put some links to some fanart from DeviantArt that helps to illustrate what I kinda see when I think about the currently-untitled Sonic Steampunk Prequel:

    http://jarredspekter.deviantart.com/art/Steampunk-Sonic-273354311

And I chose to link to their pages instead of hotlinking to the images themselves.

Not trying to backseat mod or anything, but I don't quite see where you're going with this. Are you requesting someone to make a hack like you're describing? Are you asking if something like that is in the works by someone on this site? Are you merely trying to explain your own inspiration in a future project?

Personally what you're suggesting doesn't really appeal to me. If you have some tangible artwork in the works yourself, I'd love to be proven wrong, but the whole idea feels very "not Sonic". The reason the art in Rocket Knight Adventures (which I do love by the way) works is because the game is designed around it. It creates a set and setting which together with the spirit and style of the game creates a sorts of symbiose where everything complements eachother. Slap Sonic in there and he would stand out a lot.

Sonic in there could work, but there needs to be some very clear design changes to make it feel right.

Regarding Thebox's artwork. I like the mountains, they seem to flow together nicely and not be overly repetitive. When it comes to mountains in the distance I very much prefer detailed ones that scroll very slowly rather than having the same 2 mountaintops scroll by 5 times in a level :p.

I don't really like the colours though, they don't mix very well since the contrast is too large and there's no textured overlap to make the white look like snow. They look like white mountains with a weird lightning that make them look brownish green in the shadow. That's not how hues work! I very much like this tutorial and I recommend reading through it: http://finalbossblues.com/thinking-in-color/

    EDIT: Grammar...

I swear, we've been down this road before somewhere in this thread....

Actually, I've got a much higher hope for this, namely because it does interest me. A hack that puts Sonic in the environment of diesel punk is just badass, assuming it is done properly. And like I have said in the past, the art has to make sense. Though unlike my last response, you're not taking a completely out there character and plopping them into an environment completely different of their element, and have no plans to move further.

Anyways, bedazzle mutha fucka, I want to see whatcha got. This idea actually moderately excites me, and that is somewhat difficult to do.
