I second the big red text idea, tho autolock would make sure some Darwin-Award-Worthy users don't bump them anyway

All we really need is a big, red warning message to be displayed when somebody attempts to bump an old topic, something that can't be overseen. Nobody can blame us then for not informing them then.

But, Selbi, how does a big message would prevent people to commit another bump on the same thread or even other one? I don't see a point where this would help preventing large-time bumps. I think that the auto-closing could be the only methods to prevent unfortunate bumps. Exactly like Spanner said in the post above, they can use the Report button for request their topic reopened, this way the administration/moderation/staff/etc will have more control on why the topic being reopened and decide if the motive that the topic's author said is a valid reason for the staff to reopen the topic.

The reason is simple: People don't do bumps intentionally. They simply don't know how big of a deal or how frowned upon it is (or sometimes they simply don't look at the date of the newest post). Notifying the person about it as clear as possible, while still giving the option to reply if it's really that important, is a perfect solution and should cut down most, if not all, bumps.

I believe we should give the text warning display a thorough try first, say here a few months, if sucessful, we're in business, a job well done. On the other hand, if we proceed to recieve the unnecessary bumps, then we should move to the auto-lock system, with a quick PM to a staff member to unlock a thread, if so necessary.

Simply because, it would be a smart move to test all possible methods to see which is right for us.
