I just thought that maybe having a 'Requests' forum might be a good idea since I want some music to request for.

I was with you until you revealed the actual motive behind the topic, which was the fact that you want some music. Its a very nifty pretense for trying to get it though, A for effort, definitely.

Sonic Retro had a similar, but much better idea than this, named the "Talent Exchange" where a hacker could offer their own expertise in one area in exchange for another hacker with a different skillset returning the favour.

The difference between that idea and this, is that this will never work - why would someone see your request, and for absolutely no benefit to themselves, with no guarantee that whatever it is you're working on isn't going to be totally embarrasing to have their name put on, drop everything and start doing your bidding? It wouldn't happen.

Of course, this doesn't mean collaboration should be discouraged, I just think you'd be far more successful if you made a topic stating your own skills and services which you would be willing to offer in exchange for music, then perhaps if you want any decent hacker to oblige, you should show an example of your work. This gives those who can produce music but are lacking in other areas some incentive to work for you, you both benefit out of the arrangement and as a bonus, you actually had to work for the music you received. If Qjimbo feels so inclined, he can set up a talent exchange. I was going to lock this topic, but frankly, I'm interested to see if someone replies to you.

And why is this in the "suggestions and feedback" folder exactly?

    EDIT: Ah, I see now.

I actually see a large potential in the realm of a "Talent Exchange", but a simple request-based system aint' gonna cut it...

...It's just like the damn " Lv. 100 <Insert RARE legendary Poke'mon here> " requests that you get all the time on the DS Poke'mon games' online trading system when looking for a version exclusive; those never get accepted by anyone due to the fact that the trade presented is a small thing offered with a really large thing wanted in return...

...However, a "Talent Exchange" - type system would work due to the simple fact that it's called the "Talent Exchange". It's a message sent to the lazy ones: "If you want someone's work, you'd better have something to make it worth their while... otherwise, get the hell out." It would be more than great if people were seen creating topics both asking for and offering services equally. An overall balance would be establised to the threads (that is, in the "talent exchange" section) if that were achieved.

Hopefully this idea would help make the SSRG more of what it claims and wants to be, but don't get too excited - it's usually hard to get ANYTHING working close to perfect on a forum, with all the diversity between user motives, personality, and whatnot...

The Talent Exchange was tried twice on Sonic Retro (both the original 2007 board and the merged S2B forums) and it was dropped because nobody used it anymore. Why do you think such an idea would work on SSRG?

This is due to the fact that our help topics are informal versions of this, and that people are more willing to help when they know results will follow. This is exactly how the formal version of the help threads should function.

Currently there is nothing at all stopping you from starting a topic stating that you are willing to offer, lets say for example, "I am a competent artist and level designer seeking someone with skills in assembly to collaborate with - I am willing to create a custom level for you in exchange for you providing me with some technical expertise for X feature. Here is an example of my work" or something to that effect. I certainly wouldn't delete such a topic, I doubt any of the other mods would - see here for an example of almost precisely that happening. Who knows, if you really hit it off, you might end up partnering up and working together on a singular hack. Far too many people see the concept of a requests forum and immediately think they can get something for nothing. On the contrary, you should be prepared to repay your fellow hackers in kind - if you are looking to make something ambitious you better be prepared to work damn hard for the other person to make the exchange fair. Of course, there will always be benevolent people willing to help you out just for the joy of a project to work on, but these people shouldnt be taken for granted, nor expected to do something for nothing.
