I just wanted to post the progress of my Sonic 1 Hack: Sonic the Hedgehog - "Color Edition". I don't think I'll work on it anytime soon, but I wanted to post my progress (there's some) to get some input on it.

    Here's the Download Link:

    STHCE v0.1.zip

    Here's a description:

This was a hack I started pretty much in the Summer of 2011 because I was bored. I really didn't work on it all that much because of school starting the next month. I think you all saw my crappy progress from the beginning of the year. If not here's the link to the topic:

So this is basically my progress since that release and I'd like to show the progress I've done because I probably won't work on it anytime soon. It has 3 edited levels and some new abilities that you can mess around with it if you want.

    Hack Description and Screenshots:

The title screen isn't any different so there won't be a screenshot of it.

Here is the presents screen I made for it a while back before I knew where I was going with this hack, but due to complications I couldn't change. :/

    Grayscale Zone:

The pallet was changed to gray scale, and everything in this zone is gray scale. Fully edited all 3 acts, fully playable. However I know the enemy placement is a little unfair at times, and level layout is also bland at times.

    HUD Modifications:

    /monthly_10_2012/post-1593-0-23835400-1351557117_thumb.png

The HUD font is modified to have the font style of Sonic Pocket Adventure. Also the life Icon was modified.

    Abilities and Sonic Modifications:

    Spindash:

Every Sonic Hack has this and there isn't really anything to talk about here. Ported from Sonic 2. Oh and that spring monitor doesn't actually work, I wanted to do something with it but I never did.

    Wall Knockback:

Ported from the Sonic 2 Nick Arcade dissassembly, when you hit walls at high enough speed you fall backwards.

    Boost:

When you are running and hold "B" your speed and acceleration become the same as if you got a Speed Shoes Monitor, and you are also invincible. However this I tried to make it as sane as I could. You can only have a maximum of 10 seconds of Boost at a time, and getting 5 rings will give you 1 Second and getting a Boost Monitor (below) will raise your Boost to Maximum. (Because of this you can only jump with "C")

    Emerald Monitor:

When you have 50 Rings and hit this monitor you are instantly transported to a Special Stage, and when you are finished with the special stage you go right back to where you hit the monitor.

    (Special Stage)

This is the only Special Stage I edited and I know it's very crappy but It was just me testing to see if I could make a Special Stage, and also the Special Stage count won't continue until you beat a Special Stage, but since I didn't make any more Special Stages this doesn't really matter, well you could keep your practice I guess.

    Level Select:

When porting over the Sonic Pocket Adventure Font I kind of messed up the color but I don't see a need to fix it. Anyway Zones are in order along with some of the "temporary" names I gave levels. Not all the zones work (because I disabled the selection of them), but you can access a few things there. Also I added support for a ton of music but I only ported a few songs and one crashes the game in Regen (if you let it play for too long) so be careful.

    Ending Notes:

I had fun working on this hack and I hope you have at least a little bit of fun playing it. So please leave some feedback and thanks for checking out my hack! :) Also included in the download is a text file with credits on who helped me (or tutorials I used) so please take a look at that if you would.

That boost action got me curious. I will download it, and will give you a feedback after. =D

(I can be a little too busy, so it can be a couple of days before that though. >____>)

But I think the most important thing is that you had fun with it. =)

    A few days indeed... xO

Well, I can say I enjoyed it, although there were a few things that... kinda annoyed me. ^^´

(I am a total "noob" in Sonic 1 hacking, so my opinion will only be as a "gamer".)

    - The level layout was very good, the 256x256 tile structure, that is. It had a good feel to it, I mean, it flows, and it is not "boring" or "annoying". It was not repetitive and did not "toss me" a section full of "endless void" or "trillions of spikes in a row".

    - The spindash responds very quickly too. It seems well-programmed to me. It is not like the spindash in many Sonic 2 hacks (and the real game) that does not allow immediate start of spindashing immediately when you touch the ground after falling. In S3K you can, and I am kinda used to it, and yours felt like the S3K spindash, so it is another plus. =D

    - The boost action was... a little confusing, I mean, I felt like I could use it anytime I wanted, and it is just "invincibility+supershoes=always_on"... I went to Marble Zone and it allows to walk through lava and all. I don't know. Maybe it is because I never played the modern Sonic games (the ones with boost).

    - Sorry to go rough now, but there was one thing I did not like a bit: when you run against walls, Sonic bumps back like it was hurt. This is not really a critic, it is just something I do not like even in other Sonic Hacks, because it seems to happen pretty much all the time! xD

    - Last thing: strangely, "grayscale" kinda hurt my eyes... (I am not quite sure why, but it did... =____=) ... I think I would play it again if it had normal Green Hill Zone palette, or just a slight edit.

And that's it. I hope this does not "discourage" in some way, I mean, I could not do waht you did there even if I tried. xO ... (well, maybe level layout, object position and minor palette editing, but I would have to use ESEII for that... xD)

Good hack, only I found the bug that in act 2 just to start the descent can jump the wall and roll down.
