    Alrighty, then. Screenshots, it is (I'll probably only post one or two =)

    And just in case you're wondering, yes, I have ported the S3K Priority Manager. Does this cause something with the rings manager that makes it fail?

    IIRC, no, the priority manager shouldn't affect it.

    Then there must be something else affecting it, because I followed the guide very, VERY closely.

    Any suggestions?

    EDIT: If it helps any, I did change the labels to work with the code outside of the rings manager.

    EDIT 2: Okay, I tried reverting to the BINCLUDE'd rings, but the levels still won't load. What else could I try?

    EDIT 3: Also tried mapping the rings manager's sprite to the normal ring mappings, but again, no dice. Any suggestions?

    I'm making all new original badniks both for mine and another friends hack. Its actually something that is rising to the surface in Sonic hacks now-days.

    Alright, after following a suggestion by a friend, I have a bit more info on the Rings Manager problem.

    For some strange reason, the level loads if I don't load the character, but if I do load the character, the level doesn't load.

    Maybe it's something related to the way the character is being loaded?

    Observation of the code will help your way through the tunnel my friend.

    Alright, this is DAMN confusing...

    So, here's the thing. I've tried disabling the ring attraction code, I've tried getting rid of the old rings manager RAM addresses, I've tried replacing the mappings pointed to in the rings manager...all with no success. Seriously, I'm almost tearing my hair out at this point! D:<

    So, here's how the rings-related addresses look right now:

    Ring_Positions: ds.b $600 ; $FFFFE800-$FFFFEDFF ; positions of rings
    Ring_start_addr_ROM = ramaddr( Ring_Positions+Rings_Space )
    Ring_end_addr_ROM = ramaddr( Ring_Positions+Rings_Space+4 )
    Ring_start_addr_ROM_P2 = ramaddr( Ring_Positions+Rings_Space+8 )
    Ring_end_addr_ROM_P2 = ramaddr( Ring_Positions+Rings_Space+12 )
    Ring_free_RAM_start = ramaddr( Ring_Positions+Rings_Space+16 )

    Should I change the Rings_Positions equate (as in, is there an issue with it)? Or is it something different that's causing the issue...?

    And before I end this post, here's something to whet the appetite for the Hacking Contest build of this hack (if the Rings Manager is fixed in time for it):

    I know it's simple, but it's something to work off of.

    That palette is atrocious and the art is awful. Fix both.

    Palette is the exact same as original Metropolis Zone.

    Art is not final. Will work on it today. I guarantee it will look awesome when I finish it.

    That bright green is fine for the small highlights Metropolis zone uses it for, it's horribly eye searing when you use it s the primary colour of the level. Also, the shading you're doing is known as "pillow shading"; and if you Google that term and you'll find a million sites saying "DON'T DO THAT IT'S AWFUL" and also plenty of tutorials on how to shade properly, so study up!

    In future, when you take screenshots of things, instead of "Print-Screen"ing the whole screen, just "Print-Screen" the window you want to show us.

    For example, if it's a shot of SonED2 you want to show us, make sure that window is active, then hold the "Alt" button and press "Print-Screen" and it will only take a shot of that active window.

    Is this better?

    [IMG]

    (I would use more shades but I can't without messing up the outer boundaries of the square :U

    EDIT: Didn't see your post there, RHS. But okay, I will do the Alt+PrintScreen thing from now on.

    The style of block you have in your first screenshot would be shaded very similarly to the Emerald Hill/Hilltop blocks. Light hits the top of the bevel around the block, making it brighter, and the bottom is in shadow. I understand that you might not want it to look too close to another zone's art, but changing the bevel size / adding some texture etc. would make it look more distinct.

    Alright, so after some toying around, I think I found a basic style of shading that I am satisfied with for the time being. Here's an example of this shading

    [IMG]

    I've made it so that the light appears to be coming from the top and a bit to the left. I know it doesn't really look as good as the original Metropolis Zone art in comparison, but that guy was getting paid. So who's the real winner? Well, technically, still him :U

    Anyway, I'd like to know if there's anything else I can do to improve this, so comments and criticisms are welcome.

    (Also, I'm still hoping that a solution to the S3K Rings Manager issue can be found...)

    Alright, sorry about the double post, but I want to explain what I've decided to do.

    After trying almost EVERY possible thing related to the S3K rIngs manager, I decided to just back up a bit and go back to S2's rings manager for the time being, because clearly S3K's does NOT want to play ball.

    On another note, there is something else I finally got back around to: reverse gravity. And yes, this WILL be implemented in time for the Hacking Contest.

    And finally, here's a picture of what Rusty Riot Zone's new art looks like in-game:

    [IMG]

    For some reason I was unlucky enough for the Super stars to get in the way of Tails at the time of this picture, but meh, I can't be arsed to replace it.

    *Dies*... incomplete stuff looks like shite. Plus this zone will better be avoided by me. I don't like repetitive designs... I can hardly tolerate GHZ's grass, but this... Its the same design over again, just stretched and scaled.

    IT'S A Very, but VERY, rare art for that zone name. It seems to be incomplete and unfitting with the palette, trough. It could look better with some improvements.
