Hello everyone on SSRG. I've recently started making A Sonic fan game called "Sonic in The Bit Zones" which is kinda like Sonic Generations where you play levels from throughout the Sonic series but it's more forgotten levels. (One of them including Labyrinth Zone.) Now, I've not gotten very far in this game, but here are some screenshots.

    Levels Status

    ----------------------------

    Green Hill 1 - Complete

    Green Hill 2 - 75% Done

Green Hill Boss - Not Started

    Labyrinth 1 - 95% Complete

Any Level Past that - not started

    Special Stages

    ------------------------

S.S. 1 - Complete, but gonna make changes

    S.S. 2-7 - Not Started

    Characters

    ---------------------

    Sonic - Completed So Far

Tails - Missing Flying and Spindash

    Knuckles - Not Started

    Shadow - Possibly...

    Silver - Possibly

So that's all I have for it so far. Tell me if there's anything you need to know or want to suggest. I also need a good Title Screen Sonic, Tails, and Knux.

I wouldn't suggest posting stuff like this. Plus, fan games aren't exactly taken very well here. All I'm going to say about your game is that you ate least have proof you're working on it, unlike some of those going "dO dIS all 4 me".

This is community is more into hacking rather than fan games. That doesn't mean you should cancel your game, yes It doesn't look too impressive yet, but you still have time to improve. Just move the game to another community that will accept fan games more than here, alright? I'm just warning you before the other members attack you.

I would post it to Sonic Retro but I can't post anything yet there for some strange reason. But if this community doesn't like this game, I'm fine with that, but I'm just giving this a chance. Oh, and I forgot a screenshot for Labyrinth Zone so here...

There's other websites besides Sonic Retro...

Not always. If they're done right, there is some room for acceptance. The community has the same stance on fan-characters as well, but hacks like Panna der Hejehog and Red Hot Sonic were received well. Why? Because they were well done.

This, however, is not done well. It looks nothing like a Sonic game. Heck, it doesn't look like a fun game in it's own right. I've seen better Flash Sonic games. It falls into the "screen is too zoomed-out" fad, and it looks slippery as heck. Not to mention the HUD looks ugly as heck, and Labyrinth Zone looks blander than oatmeal. For the record, ianmlp, the platforms shouldn't just float there without any support. They need to look grounded. You can place platforms in the air, but the screen needs to scroll up so the platform is at the bottom of the screen. Otherwise, it just looks awkward.

Next point: Nothing in the special stage fits together. It looks like you took random assets out of different games and stuck them all together. The floor, the background, the rings, everything looks awkward and out of place.

Next: The stages. They're too flat. No sloping hills, no loops, nothing. That's not Sonic. That's a platformer without an identity.

Final point: The HUD. I buzzed over this, but let's dive into it. The life monitors look ugly. Super-pixilated, and Sonic and Tails look ugly (the redundancy is redundant with this post). The numbers also look out-of-place, and need to be re-centered. You also need to fix the ring icon. I could barely tell what it was.

I'm done. Work on your fangame more before showing screenshots.

I basically restate what has been said above. It's been said many times on these types of forums, but hey, maybe you haven't read many other posts yet (which I'm assuming you haven't). So, allow me to repeat. You aren't going to come in here and wow someone with a fangame that looks like it was slapped together in a half an hour or so. You need to have patience, as really, we're not pushing you to make something. Heck, I really haven't released anything AT ALL yet, but I still work. But, that is beside the point, so let's get back on track. The main thing I'm trying to get across to you is to take some time, work on this for a while, polish it up, and THEN show it to us. Not in a state like this, where, as said before, it's worse than many Flash Sonic games. So, please, do yourself a favor, and make this something good, because this doesn't look like anything very good to me. Have a nice day. :p

Well considering his age (he's 14, like me, I looked into his profile), he probably hasn't studied Geometry and Trigonometry yet. I have studied Geometry and I am now beginning Trigonometry/Algebra II, because I skipped middle school to high school.

Anyways, he can probably look at some Sonic engines and see how the slopes work and learn sin, cos, etc. on Google for that if he needs the Sonic slopes as soon as possible.

Speaking of fan games, I am in fact helping Moryo with his game and I developed a small test engine. I tried my best to be as accurate to Sonic as possible. I implemented slopes, monitors, rings, rolling, spindash, peelout, correct jumping, correct physics (almost anyways). I still has a few bugs, but I'll sort them out. I posted a video of it on YouTube, but it has no rings or monitors, you can check it out if you want. I did that in 2-3 days.

So yeah, he'll need to know Geometry and Trigonometry in order in add slopes and correct physics.

EDIT: Is it possible to give a download of your game? I'll need to feel the physics of the game in order to give you criticism of the game, so you can fix the problems.

In fact, check out the Sonic Physics Guide over on Sonic Retro.

With all due respect... I find this NO excuse. There are a number of resources that can emulate the physics enough to bear some resemblance to a Sonic engine. Hell, you could even just start with a pre-made engine and go from there. I myself have studied ZERO trig... aside from the mandatory stuff in high school which I honestly just did what I needed to, in order to "get by". and yet I can code something resembling proper Sonic movement. How? By studying what has been provided by many great members before.

Not trying to be a dick, but you don't have to be too much of a math wizard to type in a few lines of code. This to me... being totally blunt here, reeks of new kid trying to program something before he really knows how... being a GMC member, I see too much of this on a daily basis and honestly feel that's what we've got here.

I don't want to go off on you as if you've no hope... I'd definitely like to see what you can make of this once you've got a grasp of what you want/can do, so please take this as constructive criticism, but please show us this again when you've got a solid idea of what you are doing.

PS That Physics Guide is WIN. Look it over if you are stumped.

Hmmmmm, fangame lectures huh? Yeah, I'm gonna stand clear of that and stick to the point.

It's a neat idea and I don't discourage it, though I will say that it all feels disorientating. Take the HUD for instance, the TIME/SCORE are one font design, the numbers are another design and a larger design, the ring icon is a much smaller design, the lives icon is a huge design. And because of the difference in size, everything looks unaligned and a tad bit messy.

I congratulate you on your engine though, I mean, if it works, then who am I to complain...

Consider cleaning it up and organising it all a bit, and you're pretty much good to go!

I did mention engines, but I said that he could learn from them. I guess it's OK for him to use one and go off from there.

(Wow, I am so arrogant, too. Look at the top of my last post, I was bragging about how I am smart at math. Why must I be born this way?)
