Just a question... would I be banned if I do this?

I'm currently making a Sonic 1 hack, the only one I've announced (The one with Sonic and Mighty.) But I mentioned that I wanted a homing attack in my hack (cliche I know, I was going to make the game focused on it though), I've done so in the past, but I was younger, never uploaded it. What I'm getting at is that the code I found for a homing attack was speculated to have been stolen from Sonic Megamix, I used that code in my own old hack when I wasn't at all involved in asm (younger and dumber, thinking I was a master hacker, I've stepped down from that attitude nowadays) so, I ended up copy-pasting the code in with no regard to anything. The code came from someone called OuricoDoido on asmtosegagenesis.com, who I've heard has a bad reputation of stealing, but I've been tempted to use the code in my new hack, since I really want a homing attack, but I fear I'll be banned of the research group if I end up using it.

End of the day question: Can I use the code without being banned, should I find a way to make it myself, or just give up on the homing attack?

Just to point you in the right direction, this post should help you get started if you do decide to make your own.

Going off what Spanner said, yes, do not use that code. OuricoDoido did in fact lift that code out of Megamix. Don't use anything from his "open source project".

If you want the homing attack, you're gonna have to make your own.

A good rule of thumb is to either know who programmed the code, or to do it yourself. If you don't know where the code came from, then you don't use it. The problem with using stolen code is that it can also cause problems in your hack, much so for code from Megamix. Megamix is a heavy edit of Sonic 1, and a lot of RAM addresses have been moved around. Sonic 1 might even freak out and explode at some parts, especially if you add onto it with heavy modifications that may shift other things around.

I agree with everyone else: Don't use code from that site.

If you're really stuck, I do have a homing attack method, although the downside to mine (at least everyone views it as a downside; I view it as a unique feature, but whatever) is that it's a constant-time homing attack as opposed to a typical constant-speed homing attack.

Now this is just my take on it, but at least he had the courage to ask first. Whether the answer was self-explanatory or not doesn't matter, especially considering that most people with stolen code rarely ever admit it.

Cut this guy some slack, people.

I very much agree with selbi. Unlike most noobs, who simply make a hack showoff going "I maek homnig atatck", Mr. Antisocial here went through the trouble of explaining every single aspect of the situation, and was merely asking if such a thing could be accepted if credit was appropriately due. I find it odd that most of the responses are infinitesimally more childish then the OP, usually its the other way around! If you want to look like your not a jerk, respond at least as well as the poster your answering!

Pacguy pretty much said my thoughts on this. Seeing as any topic a newbie starts that even remotely asks a question tends to decline into Whack-A-Newbie®, the unnecessarily harsh scolding is more or less gonna have to stop.

    Now.

(Yes, I'm aware I'm kind of backseat modding here, but this kind of thing is getting old.)

Every Homing attack code i've ran up on was deemed stolen. Try building from scratch, taking code from something that affects Sonic, or his jump code to make it

Pretty much what everyone else said, don't use it. trust me when I I say that I found out in the same way that you did only to find out that it was stolen when I used to work on xero way back when and that did'nt go well at all, but as selbi said at least you had the guts to ask this kind of question so I can commend you for that. but yea never used any form of stolen code or you will regret it.

I just looked on that 'asm to sega genesis' fourm site. Clicked on 'Sonic Open Source Project'. The first topic I went to forced me to terminate Flash to get on. I see the quality in OuricoDodio's moderating.

But, anyway, ask around on the fourms and see if anyone is able to help you out on it. No one likes to spell it out, but if you have some basic knowledge of ASM then a little help from someone who is good at this stuff will really increase the quality in your work. Just a thought.

Bump. Y'know, I've used the stolen code from that little punk before in the past, and got scolded by the staff. So whatever you do, do NOT use any code from him. That forum should be removed on behalf on not only SSRG, but Sonic Retro and SGD. It's pretty much like a chop shop there.

EDIT: noticed a grammar issue, fixed that.
