Changing the standard is how the scene always has evolved. What you're implying is that high quality new art is some kind of unattainable 'level'. What Spanner seemed to mean, is that maybe this level of quality should be a new benchmark for those aspiring to enter the contest and improve their own work. Examples of good art in hacks should show 'new blood' what to strive for, not discourage them; the scene has, for a very long time, gone far beyond simple palette changes as the standard for art edits. Don't get me wrong, I love a good palette edit/small art edit, but this should be by no means be the limit of what 'newcomers' think they are able to do.

On topic, +1 to this being fantastic work so far! I especially love the Eggman Monitor portrait. I'm also curious about any gameplay changes/gimmicks that might be introduced (although you said you suck at code, it might be worth thinking of an idea, and giving it a shot). The aforementioned 30-Day Project implemented an emerald monitor that you needed to find in order to beat the level, for example. Either way, I can't wait to see what you have in store for the next 12 days!

Well, aspiring new blood and giving them people to strive for is always good.
I just hope Spanner is not expecting more hacks of this quality in such a small timespan, though, because that's a bit too unrealistic for newcomers.
Aside from that, though, this 16-Day Challenge is definitely shaping up to something great. I can't wait to try it out. :3

What I got from Spanner's post was that he was using this hack (which looks amazing by the way) to show off what an SHC entry should look like, regardless of how much time it took to make it.

    Hmm...makes sense...
I definitely know that people like me would have trouble trying to reach at least the graphical standard that is awaited, since I'm really sucky at art, have barely any time to actually practise art, and I have no money to pay artists to do the work for me, so it's pretty much either "mediocre art by me" or "scavanger hunt for artists that do work for free", but eh, I hope at least those with bad art skills at least can shine in other departments.

All I am really saying is that what we are seeing in this hack is what I would like to see more of in this year's contest. I think we can all agree that many of last year's contest entries certainly needed a lot of room for improvement. We aspire for quality, not quantity - take a look at the quality control criteria in the SHC thread and post there if you have any queries regarding that.

And as for a short timespan well people have plenty of time to make a contest entry, I do not expect everyone to make something like this in just 16 days, I just think that people would use that available time given well to make an excellent entry that would appeal to judges, streamers and players altogether. Something like this hack, if submitted, would certainly be something that would attract many people to play it.

Anyway, this isn't the contest thread, so let's get back to Mr. Cat's 16 Day Challenge.

Wow, jesus. This hack is gorgeous and is impressive so far!

    Its too good. Too good.

(lmao when it takes you 12 days to make a level concept idea and art and this guy does it in 2 days)

The shading of Sonic's face on the signpost looks kind of odd

Wow, this is some really nice stuff, and in only 5 days as well! My only criticism with today's showcase is that the sphere-bot's projectiles blend in with the foreground in the first screenshot, and it can be hard to see. Maybe you could change the palette of the projectiles to something a bit brighter and more vibrant to set it out from the level art?

I'd give Sonic a different expression for the signpost sprite, and take into consideration what A-S-H pointed out. Pure eye candy otherwise.

(green hill zone with sand actually done right)

I only need to make a small bit of art and fix platforms, and act1 will be done.

Oh, and I need to fix this lol

I wonder why the palette is changed...

    Day 6\16

I finished the act completely, except for some art. I still need to add some for the last section and add some to the BG to stop it from feeling empty.

Uhm... I don't really know what to show really? Here's a new "Sonic Has Passed" font on top of some placeholder art... yeah. There's really nothing interesting to show right now, I just polished a lot of stuff out.

The next day will probably be dedicated to even more polishing... and then I will start act 2, and updates will be interesting again!

    ...I promise...

Looks stunning, although the background palette being the same as the foreground doesn't work for me. But I assume you're still working on that.

From the looks of it, a background isn't even implemented yet.

If that's the case, then the foreground is over-crowded (especially the first picture).
