Great job my friend, I think this hack will be a success, maybe you could try to publish it for SHC 2021, but There is no much time before this event, I recommend you publish it for SHC 2022. If by chance razor & zenon make a gameplay video of it, there will be comments of people of this forum. don't mind comments like "this is a bad hack, i hope creator feels bad". The people that say this thing aren't rom hackers and they don't even know how to hacking sonic games. Btw Good job!

Thanks! I hope Razor & Amy uploads my hack video. I forgot to add spindash, that's optional! I hope he added to SHC2021 not 2020. lol

This hack needs a lot of work and improvements
Firstly, this spindash is clearly unfinished. Did you follow the entire spindash tutorial? The HUD looks nice but you forgot to change the E.
    upload_2021-6-27_13-12-40.png
Next, the level design need a lot of improvement. At the beginning of the level there's a loop and a hill and then directly after that a bottomless pit. I don't think I need to tell you how not good that is. I recommend you avoid bottomless pits especially in the first act of the first zone.
    upload_2021-6-27_13-20-59.png
This chunk is missing its Object 3Cs which is what makes the wall breakable.
    upload_2021-6-27_13-23-32.png
The spring looks really out of place in the slope here and the best part is it doesn't even work as you probably wanted it to.
The worst part about this hack is the only zone that as changed level design is Green Hill and it's pretty bad as I've outlined earlier. All of the other zones are completely unchanged except for the palettes and oh boy are the palettes not good.
    upload_2021-6-27_13-32-35.png
Totally not Marble Zone not only looks too similar to GHZ's palette, just like GHZ's palette it also doesn't look good.
    upload_2021-6-27_13-33-56.png
Labyrinth doesn't look too bad but the underwater palette barely changes which is something you should never do because it doesn't look good at all.
    upload_2021-6-27_13-35-21.png
Star Light's foreground doesn't look that bad but the background looks like garbage.
    upload_2021-6-27_13-36-30.png
When I saw the name "Natural Yard" I was expecting something spring yard with brown and green but honestly you should have called it "Hulk Yard instead because it's all green and looks bad.
The music is way to loud and sounds really bad and barely fits the levels they play in.
What can you do to improve?
If you want level design tips try looking at the level design of Sonic 3 or my hack Sonic Sunventure which has good level design until that one shoehorned spike section in act 2 (which I got rid of). Even though it's not Sonic I always recommend Donkey Kong Country (and DKC 2) for good level design tips. For the palettes, try looking at the palettes of other sonic games and take notes on how they do colors.
also I just love it when my computer lags and sends my post before I'm done writing it

I'm not going into a full review here but I'll say to focus on how Sonic level design works. In the SSRG Archives thread, by selecting tutorials, you can find a pinned comment explaining Sonic level design and how it works. But like do not look at original level design or inspire by other hacks. In you hack, I can see a bottomless pit in the first level which shouldn't happen as it is the first level, meaning it's supposed to be easy, not challenging. There are also unsuitable chunks such as this one:
    Sonic - Project Regal.000.png
Here, obj3C is supposed to be there which is the object that makes the walls breakable. Be mindful that there are three subtypes.

There is also the spindash which rather than watching Selbi's video, which is over 10 years old, the SCHG guide is pretty useful if you want to make a perfect spindash. There is this useful tutorial by Hitaxas which shows you how to port the spindash:

It's a very user friendly and you should learn from that.

The music is decent but the first level has no snare which makes it a bit bland. Some songs are too loud or too quiet. I'd advise avoiding these music packs and give a go at MID2SMPS or SMPSConv as you can make great ports of music from them. The art for the HUD is a nice touch although you forgot the 'E' which is in a separate art file (artunc/hud.bin is what you need to look for) As for the palettes, I like how they look, even though there are some areas that need improving, you did a great job. Well done! But they don't look:
I'm sorry if I'm going to come across as harsh, but saying that is a dick move. You are clearly being rude and unwelcoming to a newcomer who wants to learn how to do Sonic ROM hacking. Not to mention saying something that is garbage is quite harsh.

That's also a dick move too since you're disowning other people's opinions. Yes, it is harsh to say, but think about how some people would feel when they see that. Wouldn't they feel discouraged?

Besides that, I like where this ROM hack is going. There are some bumps such as the music and level design but I hope you do manage to find these errors and fix them to the best of your ability. Good luck! :)

In its current state, this hack really has nothing interesting to show.
Unfinished spindash, music taken from external sources, the only thing I can say is that it has nice palettes, but is it that remarkable of a thing?
The most groundbreaking thing I can say your hack has is the half of a level you edited. I say half because you clearly left behind a great chunk of level from the original GHZ1.
I will say what you've made is a good start, but it's just a start.

In a few words, this hack has too little work done to warrant showcase and interest. Come back when you have more to show.

Most trialists make the same mistakes with this, although there are things that should be corrected eloquently, the game looks good, but not in this case with minor changes, if you see the levels of the original game and discover the tools that are here, you will learn to use very well then.
Let's be nice to him and if you need help, ask to us, don't be shy, the problem is that many of us act like this when we see this kind of thing, but here more than one is helping him to change and improve.
Sonic's gameplay is based on a 2D platform, with mixed levels, although nowadays the ideas are much broader, my recommendation would be to make a game that is based on your ideas. I know that many of us have copied ourselves from other hacks about levels and stuff, but for better performance, develop something of your own.
It's not garbage, the color is good, but he has to darken the background and retouch the foreground a bit, the rest of the areas have palettes that are a bit light, but him can fix them and I know you will do a good job, Regal.
Relax friend, no one came to hurt or tear the Regal project down, criticism is always there, we can all agree, or disagree, it is life and that is why we must learn.
About music, in time try to use these tools that DeltaWooloo suggestions, I know that you will achieve incredible things with that.

For being your first hack is very good, this is a good start. I want start with the good: -Nice hud, I like the colors. -Good palette for GHZ. -Good music selection, The Sonic 4 music is very nice. Bad points: -You forgot remove speedcap, the gameplay is a bit weird with Spindash, and Speedcap, (I don't want talk about Spindash animation, it doens't matter too much). -A bit weird level design, well, is your first hack, I hope of you can improve that. I dont want be rude, but this is for me to 6.4/10, this needs more improves, but is a good start, sir.

First of all, the HUD looks pretty dang cool! Level design is a bit meh but the palettes look fairly good. They just need a bit of tweaking. And the music is great!

This rom hack looks very promising, hope to see it in the future! =D

Source code loss. Always a sad event.

I want this post to be a reminder for every ROM hacker (actually, every computer user) to always make backups of important files. This will prevent events like this from happening again.

For now, use whatever you've learned from developing this hack to make something better. I wish you good luck.

To be more specific, I advise setting up a Git account, mainly GitHub, as you can save states of your disassembly and return back to its state if you messed something up. It can also be used for teamwork if you want to bring a friend around to help.

This is wrong. I guess the more criticism is, the more would help improve a person or a thing. And also, DeltaWooloo has warned you for the "supposed bad influence" you left on a person. Calling them to disown criticism is a bad habit and will have consequences preceded by letting them feel discouraged. Imagine what world would be worser if nobody have listen to another one's criticism, and everyone feel discouraged, and no everything were improved? And don't tell him to publish for SHC 2021 or 2022, it because it just a simple music and palette hack, and only the first act of Green Hill Zone were almost completely changed. And also, Razor & Zenon or Amy Rose only plays the first zone.

    See?

You'll respond or not... but let me reply to another one's post first.

    Sonic CD
    styled spindash.

    But I'm okay with that.

Yeah, the Spring Yard with entirely green is also OK for me, plus the music here was OK.

    And then, next one.

The first one, HUD is okay, and second, he only changes the almost most of the first act of the Green Hill Zone, and third, and fourth... hmmmm... I mean... hmmmm... (Hmmmm... it has been a debate for the rest of my life)

But this rom hack didn't warrant that it looks very promising, just like my Sonic ROM hacks. And also, it didn't deserve more attention since it was lazy-made ROM Hack.

(And it seems that you made a bit similar mistake that Dragonightmare have made.)

Well, I can feel your feelings. But first you must look at my criticism on the hack:

Green Hill Zone act 1... it does challenging. But there's one thing I hated: the part where you jumps on the red spring below two Buzz Bombers. If timing wrong and you'll hit by the two badniks. That's also the reason why I have to rerecord my gameplay for my recent video many times.

And if you uses the Speed Sneakers on that zone, the music will slow down, letting the player feel like a depressed downer.

And the rest of the game since Green Hill Zone act 1 was completely almost unchanged. Honestly, I have two word to describe this: you're lazy. ROM Hacks like one you made didn't deserve more attention, like what my ROM hacks did.

The name for Sand Castle Zone (aka Marble Zone originally) was too unnecessary. But someone said that you uses GHZ palette on that zone which doesn't look good on his opinion, but I have to debate for the rest of my life, again.

Natural Yard (aka Spring Yard Zone originally)... nothing to say about all the green palette, it's OK for me, but music fits in my opinion.

And then, Angel Machine Zone (aka Scrap Brain Zone originally)'s palette is red almost everywhere on that zone. Looking good fitting. At Act 3, I liked your red palette on that place very much. And also, at Final Zone, the red palette can fits the tension of the final battle on my opinion. And also, you used the music from Gradius II, since I was once a fan of that game franchise back years ago.

And the ending music used on your hack... first few seconds of it reminds me of Astro Malaysia's 2015 Chinese New Year song... both were too similar to each other. And tell me what did this ending music came from? And also, no flowers came out if you gathered all the Chaos Emeralds and beat every zone, which Sonic shocked for no reasons, as looks like if the Chaos Emeralds all he gathered doesn't do anything.

And that's all. You made me play the whole Sonic the Hedgehog game again despite I beat it at 100% completion on STH1 2013... I'm doing that again just because showcasing your palette changing effort on your hack.

    Here's my gameplay video below.

Thank you for changing my mind about my recent Sonic 1 hack (Troll Sonic 2: The Reckoning) and putting the supposed-upcoming Winter Build onto my Sonic 2 sprite hack's folder together.

Have a good day after reading this, anyone on this forums. Nothing to say further more.

Hey, Patafoin, Sonic's oh no count on my gameplay video is... exact more than... hmmmm.... I mean.... hmmmmmm... (and then has been debated for the rest of my life, again, and again...)
