I quit keep making Sonic ROM hacks anymore because SonED2 keeps messing up my edited project and fueled my desire to give up. Also, I won't make Sonic ROM hack gameplay videos or anything Sonic-related videos anymore. I won't return back here ever again anymore, but thanks everyone for a month of following and fun, that's fun while it didn't last. :(

    Good bye.

Well, I don't know if you'll see this, but for anyone else reading this thread, SonLVL is pretty great, and is still supported and updated to this day. General PSA for those who are struggling with/don't like SonED2!

Although it was also good, but even SonLVL didn't do anything other than couldn't save and it lack good thing such of extended object list that SonED2 have! This was proven when I was attempting to modify a Sonic 1 hack (Sonic 1.23) when the source code was left by the hack creator alongside the ROM hack just help him fixing his hack, then when I finished my touch on his hack, the former problem happens on me. :(

For God's sake, this is something I call a "laughing thread", just because you use a tool and it brings trouble to you, you must not publish this kind of post.
So it means that you don't want to learn, the tone of the post sounds like a wasted effort. Will you continue to moan like a child just because a tool doesn't work?.
Stop wasting your posts and start working with your head up, come on man, leave the humiliation and immaturity. So, if before I followed your way crying like a girl, the results it would have been worse. I learned this with kick and punch, without crying and working constantly.
I don't want to see these types of threads here again, if you joined the forums, you must accept the rules, there are help threads for you to ask, there are more tools to use, learn please and study how they are used. If you are going to stop hacking, you should do it in private and in silence, not all of us we are paying attention from other people things, it would be best if you leave the complaints and start to open your mind.
I have been in this for ten years and I have never given up on continuing, if you are not ready to work, you must mature and think then what to do, please stop being impatient and listen to others.
Sorry if this sound a bit rude, but I'm sincere and my opinion is always good, just stop make that and go ahead, there are useful tools apart of SonED2.

    Bro you ok?
Make a hack not is tooooooooo hard, If you have problems with SonED2 better use SonLVL (is more easy for me).
Yeah this is more like a YT video like a ssrg serius post, very unnecessary.
Yes, this is a Sonic Hacking forum for show hacks or search help, not a forum for announce yt stuff and more but tecnically is sesrhing help with SonED2.
Meh better report o ignore this threads, is very unnecessary.
''never give up if you want to be famous and successful'', Better see a tutorials and still praticing, in the 99% of the cases the people dont start being masters.
Sorry for a errors, i confussed translating a few words and expressions but i understand the error.
Dont give up, with practice your gonna be better. Try to use another editor like sonlvl and still praticing. Good luck (Only if you need a tools, i recommend use for sprite editing Flex2 and SonLvL for level design)

Ah yes, sorry for that, I did not express myself correctly, next time I will try to review and correct the text better (sometimes there are errors of expression between my native language and English) it error won't be repeated.

    I have some questions.
    1. Did you hit the save option before you build the game. After that you run it.
    2. Also, the extended object list in SonED2 is quite useless. You need to know pattern load cues. For example, if you place a yadrin in green hill it would look like a sprite mess.

    3. If you tried to add any code. Make sure you save the file, hit build. And play the ROM. :)

So you want to give up? think about what are you doing.

if you use SonED2 think about this common problem:

Is my disassembly compatible with the last version of SonED2?

most of the disassemblies with the SonED2 project files accross the internet may be not compatible with the current version of the disassembly you are using. so, after editing, your levels will be messed up or completely empty.

    in this case you can:
    1. change to a more recent disassembly (like the github one, which is always updated)
    2. check if your disassembly contain projects for an old version of SonED2
    3. download the new version if your disassembly have only the projects files for the newest version.
    4. use SonLVL

i hope this will help you! :)

I just got a bunch of things to clarify after reading what I've seen:

To a few of you who recommend SonLVL, while I agree that SonLVL is miles better than SonED2, some people fancy using it over SonLVL because it is flexible, and some people do prefer using keyboard binds rather than using a mouse. However, as long as people can make levels, then you should be okay with either tool. It's like keeping your old car because it functions merely the same as buying a new car. So, although you're pretty new with ROM hacking, give SonLVL a good go first before considering the latter, ExtremeBehavior.

Also, Mr Joker27, not to break the rules myself, but you've been backseating mod way too many times. I get you're trying to help around, but you don't want to risk losing your membership, do you? And DarkerSS, why do you have to be disrespectful to them? At least try to kindly lend them a hand and guide them not to lose their trail. How would you feel if you made this thread and someone said the exact words you just said to them?

As for my opinion, ExtremeBehavior, do not give up. You have the potential to make something good. Would you please search around SSRG and SonicRetro for helpful guides and tutorials? I've made this valuable list of tools for you to take a look at.
    • Notepad++ or ConTEXT (free and easy to use) or Visual Studio for ASM editing
    • Give SonLVL a go for level design (don't use ESE or ESEII as they are outdated tools and most likely won't work on your PC). But as I previously said, use SonED2 if you like.
    • SonMapED or Flex2 to incorporate art into your hack (I'd personally use SonMapED, but Flex2 is user-friendly)
    • SMPS Converter (porting songs, SMPS Research Pack required)
    • I'd recommend using AMPS Sonic 1 or 2 disassemblies (GitHub for S2 and Hivebrain for Sonic 1. AMPS (a sound driver for Mega Drive games), IMO, is primarily user-friendly, as long as you study the documentation well and ask anyone who knows AMPS, you could do a lot when it comes to music)
    • I'd recommend using GIMP/Paint.NET for custom art
    • There is MID2SMPS for custom songs through MIDIs.
    • Use MarkeyJester's 68k guide (highly recommended to those who want to start 68k hacking)

In the end, it's not the end of the world. You can do anything you want with your hack; you need to push yourself, put your head down and focus. You'll be amazed how far you've come once you finally completed your hack.

I wish you the best of luck, ExtremeBehavior~.

I said, my words are good and positive, I'm not trying to hurt him, anyway, sorry if someone thinks that I'm making a mistake. Alright, if someone thinks that I'm a bad person, my apologies, good luck.

So, let's address all the issues in this thread because there are more than just in the original post.

First of all, SonED 2 on its own can not mess up your hack. Either incompetence using it, or something you're doing in the disassembly is messing it up. All SonED 2 does is save binary files of the various data edited, which are included into the disassembly automatically. The worst it can do is save a blank file, yet I've never had that happen in all the years I've been using it.

Next, DarkerSS. No need to act like a dick even if this is a stupid thread. You're still a trialist, so maybe best to paint yourself in a good light and use the report button instead in future.

Finally, Mr. Joker. I can't even count how many times I've had to tell you to stop backseat modding and yet you continue to do so. I've even had to deal with multiple people reporting your posts for this exact behaviour and it's getting seriously frustrating now. If you have an issue with what someone is doing, then report it. I'm not interested in what your intentions are when backseat modding, you've been asked many times by many different staff to stop. It's not your responsibility to tell people what they should and shouldn't do, or to dictate what type of threads you want to see. That's the job of the staff, and even more so the owners, to decide how things operate here. Start using the report button for issues and drop the backseat modding. Let's face it, you keep telling people to follow the rules but you're breaking a rule yourself.

I don't want to have to start handing out warnings just to get the point across, so it ends now.

SonED2 absolutley can mess up a hack. There have been so many time I have lost an entire days worth of work because it will randomly bug out and corrupt all the files. No matter what tools are used, none are perfect and mistakes will be made. Constant backups and/ or version control should be used by everyone.

To say again, no matter I uses SonLVL and modify Sonic 1.23 source code that Zrise (the hack's creator) left (his habit to left hack source code everytime he made his unfinished Sonic hacks), save the level after editing and quit the program, and then build it maunally with CMD program-like ROMPad, it is same unedited intact. :(

    And also...

And also, I'll consider return to Sonic ROM hacking, but I almost won't active here for anything other than going to other websites such of YouTube or billibilli (an Chinese video website which smiliar to YouTube) or having more time to work on the ROM hack, and since my dad and sister goes back to Muar, Johor (where I lived for many years before moved to Selangor on 2020 for attending new high school and mainly lived there since) for indenfinite time and only I and mom were living on some condo, so I can have uses this advantage to uses more time to working on the hack undisturbed and to ensure that I'll have no same problem to encounter again.

    EDIT: Damnit...

Until now, I didn't realize that I just used that folder as shown on the photo when using SonED2 editing
So zone folder appeared to be glitched.

    That was my problem.
    Sorry for causing issues
But I'll go almost inactive indefinitely while I was still working on my next hack project

Hope anyone didn't end up like me
    I was stupid... :(
