Yes you can use it if you really want to.

It looks out of place because it looks like he's reaching out for something.

Worse, I'm afraid. You're first one was better.

Too be honest I think anything other than the rolling animation looks weird for a jump dash. But that's just my opinion.

I have to agree with Animemaster, I remember giving it ago myself at one point, and finding it impossible to present Sonic in that manner without him looking out of place, there's some sort of misconception with this type of scheme.

Has anyone tried doing it with Sonic actually fully facing the direction? In all shots, he's semi-facing the screen, perhaps it would be worth trying at a different angle.

The thing is, an experienced player knows that Sonic being in a ball form means he is able to destroy enemies and monitors. This is a process done in mere micro seconds.

Should the player not be in a ball shape, the player will automatically assume that Sonic is not able to do the above, which is fatal for the jumpdash. I'd say you just stick with the rolling animation.

Yours looks good to me, and Markey it's just so bland and unoriginal to have the jump sprite as the jumpdash, but that's just my opinion. The reason I have started to add/edit animations is because it gives the game originality. Btw, what did you guys think about the New Shadow wait animation?
Edit: Think about this, someone is playing a hack and they think to themselves, oh this person probably has the jumpdash and homing attack, that's original "sarcasm". "Uses jumpdash", holy shit a new sprite, it's so original. Something like that at least lol

My jump dash does leave Sonic vulnerable though.  Back then when I implemented this, no one had jump-dashes and everyone had Homing attack (and still does)

Hey, I don't have the homing attack. But that's probably because I haven't learned trigonometry yet =P

To me, even the homing attack, which just about everybody uses, could be made original with a new sprite.

So, I was bored and I've added a new loop in my hack:

Why homming attack? Insta-Shield is ten times more better than that <_<

    EDIT: Added quote

For the record mine makes him vulnerable too, I would understand that the jump animation would work the best if Sonic was not vulnerable.

Edit: Nice work again Electroball! Although you could add some tiles to the hole and make it so Sonic would be able to walk on top of it and then make him go through it when he goes around the loop.
