I like the special stage change as well. It's amazing how such a simple change could turn it into a cool new look. Looking forward to future updates.

I'm really digging the unique art style you're going for in this hack. Don't know why but I get a happy feeling playing this. Can't wait to see more, keep up the good work!

    I guess you guys...LIKE BALLS!

    SSRG: BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

Seriously though, I think since this year's hacking contest wasn't all that exciting, I should've entered Sonic Zoom in it.

You should have, it probably could have won at least an art trophy.

I was really thinking that mine would be the worst in the contest, but actually, I think it probably would've gotten in 6th or something.

Sounds like what I should have done, because I was scared of the same thing, that it wouldn't be good enough. Some of the hacks in the contest, have little to no ASM edits >>. Also on topic, ill try the new release of your hack right now!

Edit: Maybe next contest I wont be such a bitch, and actually submit lol

Let me start off by saying, name your hack file when you send it do be downloaded. It's annoying to find s1built.bin and wonder what it is.

Sonic looks nice. He looks sorta cartoony and it works.

    Eggman looks pretty great.

The levels, although linear, are pretty fun (of what is nearly finished).

Glazed Grass bothers me because it resembles Green Hill a lot. Like, way too much.

Hectic Highway, similarly to Glazed Grass, resembles Star Light a lot. Things that helped it from being a linear version of it is the change to the orbonauts and bombs you can break.

The casino level is a casino level with pre-existing Spring Yard areas in it. As I feel like this wasn't changed too much, I'll move on.

Crystal Cave is a nice breath of fresh air. My favorite Zone in this hack. I like the little rocks popping out of the slopes you can stand on and the rails coming out of the ground.

Molten Madness is not finished. That's all I will say.

While the bosses are the ones from Sonic 1, the changes pretty much makes the fight completely different.

My favorite one is the Wrecking Ball, where you have to use slopes in order to be able to hit him. Stuff like that makes me smile.

The special stages are all pretty great.

Linear, fairly good design, no dick moves, and Crystal Cave is pretty dang nice.

I hope to see a great finished product.

Oh, and nice touch changing the zone order.

While screwing around in debug mode, I found that hitting the boss while spindashing comically results in robotniks ship popping, granting you points, and dropping an animal. Although i didd find this with debug, this may actually be an issue in the casino zone boss.

Edit: this also forces you to remain in the boss scene without a boss, forcing you to suicide to kill him properly.

To review a little more properly:

The logs in glazed grass zone are nice, but the ends look unnaturally straght. It would look much better if they had a more jagged appearance.

Sonic's death sprite is unnerving. And the custom spike death sprite legitamately scared me when I first saw it! What is this, a subtle creepy pasta?

The continue screen title is spelled with a "p"

The people shadows in hectic highway... jeez, this is getting a lot more unsettling then I woild have thought. Doesn't help that I'm playing alone, at night, and outside, but really, tone it down!

OmG special stage balls! Es bualls! Daer buals! All you need to do now is make the background balls! Even bluey sphere won't beat that!

Have you tried making a branch-to-rts to get around the invisble exploding starligjt bombs? That's how i got the orbinuats to stop spawning orbs in my hack.

New revision. It's on the front page. Changes are...

    • Since it's a crime to have a level similar to Green Hill Zone, I made a few changes to Glazed Grass's graphics.
    • A little work done on Casino City.
    • Sped up a few animations.
    • New graphics in a couple of places.
I hope I'm not making updates too frequently.

No update is too soon, no patch is too small =P

Will record a vid of me playing this sometime soon. I've been wanting to try it out but never did due to being time-crunched, especially due to having to do a lot of stuff for the SHC 2014. This is definitely going on the top of my "hacks to try out" list, though. :3

Well, I played the hack and it's very creative, I love the sprites of Sonic, the music(especially in Grazed Grass Zone), the layouts and I hope to see more updates from this hack.

    New revision, with:

    • New demos! They may not be much, but the best I could do with a few hours and HxD.
    • New demo music! It's the music that plays in the Sonic 2 GG Autodemo, and it was a pain to get it to work. A side affect of it is that it disables debug mode. Anyways, the port of it was made by the amazing cryptonymous!
    • Sound test now plays the new songs added to the game, so not only can you rock out to Planet Undertow, but take a listen to two unused features in the game.
    • Some of Casino Crisis act 3 is finished, with a new pinball flipper object!
    • The beginning of Casino Crisis act 1 was slightly tweaked, the first tweak was the platform Sonic stands on was risen for easier demo control, the second replaces the springs with flippers because PEENBUAL.
    • Some new graphics.
    Enjoy!

    Just one visual thing:
The "CONTINUE" part of the score tally text isn't italic unlike the rest.

It kinda feels like you are rushing out releases too fast, so I don't have much interest in checking it out (replaying the same hack trying to figure out what has changed gets kinda boring).

It's your choice obviously, so feel free to ignore me.

I have to side with rika_chou on this one. Over the years I've seen people lose interest in projects that tend to release updates frequently. One of those reasons being what has been stated above about having to constantly see what little bit has changed. In fact, spacing out updates will generate a much larger impact by showing a slew of changes rather than one or two minor differences. Take a look at how some of the more popular hacks of the scene handle their PR and you'll see a pattern.

It seems like he tried to wait. They may seem like small changes, but looking through the updates log, it looks like a lot of effort went into this build. The issue is getting the wait time to be long enough so that the quirks of the hack can be somewhat forgotten, and making enough changes to the point where it's all noticeable. Heck, I don't even plan to make another release of robotnik returns until one of my other projects is complete enough to be considered its' own thing.
