I have no clue what game you're working with. However, if you're working with Sonic 1, I suggest you look at the special stage ring code. Contact? Yes. Teleport you to another stage? Yes. If it's Sonic 2, look at the special stage stars code spawned from a checkpoint.

 

Unless I'm missing something, he states in the title that he's working with S2, though I may be wrong myself.

Anywho, I'd say make a check to see if the character is standing on the object for a certain amount of time (typically via a timer), and once s/he has done so, teleport him/her to a special stage. At least, that's the basic outline. If it's unclear at all, I'd be glad to go into more detail.

In any case the special stage warp should be a good place to start.

The game remember what emeralds are collected, you'd just have to find out where, and run the appropriate checks. If emerald was collected, do nothing. As for subtype, checkpoints do this very well.

 

Thanks for the tips! I'll definitely check out how the signposts do their jobs (specifically with the whole subtype system).
