Hey I remember you. Seen this way back when I first joined here practically. Hell I still even have one of your old versions too back when the hacktube page was around at the time. Still though nice to see that you are trying to get back into hacking.

Well, I suppose it's about time I posted something here.

I don't know. feels a bit mario-ish to me but that just my opinion. other than that, not bad so far, though I think that you should do something about the top part, or the bottom however you want to go about it. it looks kinda strange having two skies like that.

Kind of hard to tell what the concept is because of the two skies, but the artwork itself looks great, the bricks at the top could probably use some extra shading or dithering, but other than that, not really any problems.

So... I had two hours of free time after class yesterday, and I decided to attempt making something of a boss before leaving for work.

Still plenty unfinished, but like most things I've done at this point, it works pretty much like it did in CD.

@Shockwave: Wow, that looks pretty cool.

And now, here's my updated BG:

Now THAT looks gorgeous. Much more detail put into everything and it all fits together really well. I'd love to see that with the cycling palette active.

@Shockwave: looking good there with that boss. I only have to ask, looking from those screenshots, is it in parts? by that I mean did you custom create one and then made another one that works like it would in sonic cd?

@Dave: Much better now. also curious to see what it would look like with the pallet cycling. that and this might be a bit much but have you considered trying to make a 3rd parallax in your bg? I just think that it would look nice.

I have considered making a third parallax, but I have no idea how.

The "third parallax" is an understatement, for two reasons of which one is that it is not technically a parallax, and two is that you are not stuck at the line of "third", if your tiles are drawn right, you can make it appear as four, five or even more.

DevEd: What they're referring to is the art of swapping the background tile art with different frames, each frame showing the extra background repositioned. The tiles are swapped based on the screen's position. Go take a look at the old animated art routines, that'll give you a good idea of updating art tiles in real time. Good luck!

MarkeyJester: I took a peek at Hill Top Zone's animated tile routine, but I wasn't able to understand it. Also, I'd like to hold off on implementing the effect until I figure out how to implement the standard parallax.

Also, in case anybody's wondering how SBZ3 looks like right now, here's some pics:

BTW I'm eventually going to turn SBZ3 into a sewer level, called Egg Sewer Zone.

Looks great with the cycle in effect, it brings a lot of life into the scenery, although I think the blue used in the foreground could be a bit less saturated. SBZ3 looks like it's coming along great as well. I like the shading on some of those blocks in the second pic.

DevEd: Yup, now it blends in with the background colors a lot more while still standing out.

Well, now that I have it in a more presentable fashion, here's a video of it in action so you can see for yourself (complete with the obnoxious obstacle placement =P):

I still need some form of punishment for if Sonic falls too far behind.

If you want a punishment... How about pillars of land closing in on you in a pincer-like way? If you get trapped in between them... Squish. ;D

Perhaps Metal Sonic should have some sort of swooping attack, where he tries to attack Sonic directly? As for a punishment for falling behind, why not copy CD and use Eggman?

Or, maybe if you don't catch up, you're stuck fighting the standard Eggman boss instead of Metal.

Just to let you know guys, I am still working on this, just very slowly with what time I have. Now as i'm fixing things I've thought about how I've done time travel using the post. Currently if you walk into it at any speed, Sonic will fling into the air and then fade screen to the past. If you're in the air when you hit it, the screen just fades and you don't go to the past. (probably because your already in the air the code doesn't load quick enough). This is what I've changed so far.

If Sonic now walks into it nothing happens, neither if your in the air. But if Sonic gains enough speed.

He gets launched off screen and in to the past.

    Like so.

Now my question for you guys is basically I don't think keeping it as it is is going to work. I think people will be annoyed about how you have to be enough speed to hit the post, but what do you guys think?. Does anyone have any suggestions?.

Also I posted here because of the screenshots but since this is a question, then if this needs to be moved then by all means.

That actually seems like a good way to handle it. I actually think it would be more annoying if you ended up instantly warping really often just by accidentally touching the post. Although that probably wouldn't be an issue depending on where the posts are placed in the level. I think it can work fine like this. Maybe change it so Sonic has to be at peel out speed for it to work.

By the way, I love your level art. Amazing stuff.
