Updated the link for my Sonic 3 and Knuckles hack since it's now possible with Knuckles to go through it.

We were having a discussion on IRC about the Special Stages in Sonic 1, and the discussion moved towards the crystals, to which we all agreed had no purpose other than postponing and breaking flow, and this technically makes it a poor feature.

So I wondered if the crystals could be made to be "useful". This Sonic 1 ROM has all normal solid walls substituted for the breakable crystals (with appropriate colours to match the walls they are replacing).

I've deliberately forced it to automatically place "GOAL" objects outside of the layout area.

I thought for that very reason they were redesigned in S3 to turn into GOAL blocks upon being hit three times. Of course this is just my call on the matter, but I do believe that is a more effective way to "fix" this issue.

However, I still like the concept for the approach of fixing it!

I did that same thing for the first special stage of my first hack, Sonic 1 Ultimate. Instead of putting the goal blocks surrounding the entire special stage, I just put them next to each crystal that replaces a wall. In my current hack, Sonic 1 Next Genesis, I replicate Sonic & Knuckles' bonus stage by having the walls turn to goal blocks. It's nice to see this way applied to every special stage, though! I feel like having crystal walls or Sonic & Knuckles style walls is much more fair than open goal blocks. It gives a sense of danger without having a chance to be thrown into it randomly.

I'd love to see an improvement in Sonic 2's special stages because they're so frustrating. Maybe the ring requirements can be dropped and the player just needs to survive. Rings would then be more scarce and bombs more common as a result. It would be similar to Sonic 2 Recreation's special stages except it would still take place in the half pipe. That idea could also be frustrating, though, but we'll never know unless someone tries it.

Also did a special stage edit to the first 2 of how I properly use crystal inside Sonic 1 CaveQuest Edition. Enjoy.

So, just today, for the sake of learning and exploring the Sonic 3&K disassembly, I took the time and made a few bugfixes to the game...

    • An important fix to the title screen's FMV (mind you, the BGM seem to do a better timing match this way ;) )
    • Knuckles displays its correct frame within competition menu
    • Ring sprites display properly in 2p mode
    • Added an invisible block to Balloon Park; fixes getting trapped inside walls
    • GCZ background always at top. Seriously, how is this background is meant to be displayed? It loops with ease (it has no top/bottom limits like MZ, for example), sometimes it plays stick to the top, sometimes it doesn't. With one approach it just couldn't be fully shown, in other it scrolls up or down infinitely that it might even loop. And the game gave the two options. I prefer the first. What a mess.
    • The green drops/balls in EMZ, whatever they are (feel free to call me an ignorant, do not worry), do not reappear from the roof after reaching the low bottom
Whoever wrote the save and competition menus were not the same people in charge. Otherwise, why else would not they use the same player sprites from within the spritesheets? Because it's just slower to code? The bad part is that they decided to update Knuckles' sprite later, but because each screen uses its own sprite set, the guy in charge of the competition menu did not notice on time before releasing the Sonic 3 cartridge, and the people did notice this fact. I find it so fun... =)

    To-Do:
    • Knuckles should glide and climb to the walls in 2p mode. This is going to take me some more time, there are a lot of important code sections I can not find, just because I am not yet too used to the new names (variables, labels, etc). Some stuff took me a lot of time to fix just because being unable to find their code... Just why is this disasm so different!!

    DOWNLOAD!

Those are the most "blatant" bugs I know of. Easy and totally effortless to trigger, absolutely not "accidental" like most if not all bugs in the normal game mode. The competition mode lacked and lacks dedication and program detail, and so far has played really sloppy and broken - And in the end, just unacceptable considering the professionalism level seen in the previous games and throught the main Sonic 3/&K game. And throught all these years nobody seems to have bothered to attempt to fix nor document, neither in Sonic 3 Complete nor bug lists or videos. I am absolutely aware that I, as a trialist, should have an even stronger respect to this site's rules, and I am 80% sure this hack should had been released in the minihacks thread, but because I don't stop thinking about the other 20%, plus the fact that I am obsessed with the things done right and to bring those issues to a wider attention, are enough for me to take the risk, even over a probable ban. And I am willing to accept any consequences, as long as I do not get blatanly ignored.
    Thank you.

So I decided to redo the Spindash free challenge but just in Sonic and Knuckles. This should be possible for both Sonic and Knuckles.

    Download

Also be sure to send me some feedback.

Actually you can beat the game with Knuckles without even using the d-pad.

I know that. Therefor why I made this challenge more simple for Knuckles atm. While I am reworking Sonic 3's stages for Sonic Alone and Knuckles aswell.

I didn't feel this had enough work put into it to justify a thread of its own.

As some of you may know, I was working on a ChuChu-Rocket! ROM for the Mega Drive, it was meant to be a highly accurate port of the Dreamcast version. I stopped working on it for the contest, but, inevitably never came back to it. I just got bored of it, the problem is, I know making a port to the Mega Drive is possible, and with some extremely high accuracy too, far more accurate than the GBA version. It's not "thinking" it'll work, it's "knowing" it'll work, and when you know that factor, it becomes quite boring to make.

    http://mrjester.hapisan.com/01_Public/ChuChu-Rocket!.bin

This is more of a demonstration if anything, you can't really "play" it. Pressing start in the level playing field will spawn a ChuChu, and you can spawn quite a few of them (more than the Mega Drive naturally permits displaying I must inform you). But that's it.

Think of it as... mmmmmmoooore of a proof of concept as opposed to a final fun product to play. I'm sure you'll appreciate it for what it is dX

Ever wanted to play as Tails in Sonic Chaos' special stages? Well now you can. This was a pretty sloppy hack, probably the sloppiest hack I've made. Tails can fly forever, until he collides with the ground. (This was to allow him to be able to collect the first chaos emerald.) I disabled the timer update in the special stage, which means you have all the time you want. (This was to prevent the timer from expiring allowing Tails to collect the first chaos emerald.) I may make a better version of this hack and possibly see if I can add hazards to the special stages to make them more difficult. :p I know in early versions of the game Tails was allowed to enter the special stages, but for some reason they changed the code to prevent him from entering the special stages. I suppose it's because the very first special stage can only be completed if Sonic has the rocket shoes. https://www.mediafire.com/?kv5rklrzrn3b4df

This is brilliant! Why didn't the dumb, old original Sonic games have voice acting?
