Considering that a screenshot and a video has caused a lot of reactions in the screenshot thread, I've decided to make a topic out of this to prevent things from clogging up.

Why is this hack being created?

The idea for this hack came when I wanted to do something for the hacking contest which didn't involve innuendo special stages and a slideshow that you've probably seen and had to bleach your eyes after viewing. So, why don't I take the piss out of Dimps! We all know how bad Dimps are with Sonic games, such as placing speed boosters everywhere for no reason other to hide their shitty physics. As well as that, their latest game Sonic the Hedgehog 4 has caused a lot of fuss with their choice of objects too as well as poor physics, dust and a lot of other stuff.

    Features:

Here is what has been implemented in the game so far:

    - Speed boosters, freshly programmed and will be in every level (except from SCZ due to obvious reasons).

    - Sonic only gameplay (The removal of Tails as a playable character was actually because of using Tails' VRAM space for the dash pads)

    - Boss theme replaced with a port of the Sonic 3D unused track which is being used as a boss theme for Sonic 4.

    - A few physics tweaks to dumb down the game, after all - this is Dimps' take on things.

    - Title screen menu removed (no point for 2P mode and the options menu).

    - Misplaced sound effects for a few things.

What might be implemented for the release (do note that none of these are promised for the release):

    - The Sonic 4 version of the spikeless Bubbles badnik. (Currently being worked on)

    - Dust trails.

    - "Dimps Style" level design tweaks.

    - Jump Dash

    - Boost Button

There are no plans to implement the homing attack and gimmick stages.

    Screenshots and Videos:

    Special Thanks to:

MarkeyJester: Speed Booster programming and ASM assistance.

Tweaker: Sonic 3D Blast music port.

shobiz: Helping me fix a problem with Tails being loaded when it shouldn't be.

Dimps: For showing how shit you are at Sonic games.

Anyone else missed? Let me know!

I need to have this hack finished by this week in order to submit it to both the Hacking Contest and SAGE. If I do manage to release it, there might be another release with more features eventually.

As Ken Balough would say, this is truly Sonic the Hedgehog 2 as you imagined it.

can't wait. This looks like what DIMPS would really make it, but it needs more speed boosters.

    Here's a progress update:

    - Homing Attack has been implemented thanks to qiuu who gave me his Sonic 1 code for me to port over.

    - EHZ, ARZ and DEZ have been completed in terms of booster placement.

    - CNZ is currently being worked on. I'd like to have at least the majority of the levels dealt with by tonight.

    - Still having issues with Bubbles. VRAM space seems to be the problem, even though I removed Tails just for the speed boosters. Strange, isn't it? I'd like to have Bubbles in for the First Release and there's a huge chance that it will be in for the release.

    - Other than speed boosters, homing attack and potentially Bubbles, it is highly unlikely that anything else will be implemented in time. I might try and do something with the dust trails, but I doubt it.

I'll post a video of ARZ later when I can be bothered making it and encoding it. I can't remember the settings I used for a lower filesize when I used Sony Vegas on Windows 7. Having it on XP is a nightmare and the VideoLan Movie Creator alpha doesn't like the Kega codec.

Sure thing like the same I think about. :p

I like the speed boosters... so... interesting stuff, man. Not VERY impressive, but cool.

    2 things.

    1. Casino night's music actually sounds cool like that.

    2. Why was the spindash sound different in the boss fight than in the rest of the level?

Okay, I have the First Release done. There might be a few bugs, if you notice anything strange or you can't get past a part even with using the homing attack, let me know. I've made a few minor edits to accomodate the slight physics changes, but other than that the level layout is usually intact aside from adding the speed boosters. The Continue system has also been removed except from the end of level results part, which I am intending to replace it with an extra life if I can figure out where to put it.

The download along with other shit can be found here.

Sonic 2 Dimps Edition at SAGE seemed to go well, a few reviews have said about the speed boosters being problematic in some ways that they weren't as good as the original CPZ ones nor do they emulate Dimps' boosters properly. This has been fixed.

This might be just a novelty hack but I am going to continue this in order to create a good product. If anything, here is my current plan for the next release:

    - Updated level design.

    - Reimplementation of Continues.

    - Choice of Time Over being enabled or not, another option as well.

    - Either a menu system to progress through the game or a hub world.

    - Bosses will be in their own act, and maybe a boss rush at the end. The latter can't be promised due to how difficult it'll probably be, although relative positioning helps. =P

Aquaslash has been pressing me to add green eyes, so maybe the other option will be the choice of sprite. What do you think?

Oh and my options screen is broken for some reason and I have no idea why it's so fucked up:

I giggle every time I hear that boss music :)

About the level design, I noted there were more loops in the recent games (almost in every level). In Sonic 2, if you exclude Casino Night which doesn't have "real" walkable loops, there are loops from EHZ to HTZ, and not a single loop after HTZ, and there are actually very few loops in S1 and S3K (if you exclude Ice Cap 2).

So maybe you could add a few ones, at least in the levels which already have the art ready (using the path system and updating the existing chunks, it may be possible to add some when there isn't any though, there are many chunks with curves).

A few updates. I haven't been able to work on this much but I do however have a few new things to show you.

Firstly, the options screen is fixed. Seems that with a few align $1000s somewhere and replacing the MenuScreen code in case I fucked up somewhere has done the trick. Nothing works right now though, but it will later.

Also, I've decided that Sonic 2 Dimps Edition is going to use a Sonic Advance 3-style hub system using Hidden Palace as the overworld level. Have a few signs.

I've been following this hack for a while now. It seems pretty cool, and it is nice to see that you're carrying it on, so it won't just be "speedboosters and a new move" kind of hack. Good work, keep it up.

I have decided to abandon the Hub Zone system in favour of something better. Here's a mockup of the Level Select screen:

NOTE: By the way, I didn't realise that Retro Remix used a similar background, so it will be replaced in the real thing. Not sure whether just to use the SONIC/MILES background or something else.

Also, the collision issues that the game had has now been fixed.

You know what, have another release.

This isn't much, it's just a few bugs that have been fixed. You might see some new stuff, and you might see stuff that doesn't work right now. I was going to have a lot more in this release, but I can't, not right now. If you have a problem with that, feel free to give me a wall of text somewhere. You'd at least be talking to me.

I'm not sure whether this is going to be the last release, but the problem is that I'm not the only one doing stuff here, because I'm literally fucking useless with a lot of stuff and as such, people offer their help for me to this hack. In addition, I'm tired of getting shit just because I made this stupid hack. So what, it parodies Dimps. Nobody gives a shit.

    Comments are welcome.

Thanks for automatically activating level select! :p

EDIT: Here's a bug in CPZ act 1.

I was pushed by a speed booster and then, I entered the tube withoust destroying the top of that tube, as seen here: http://img178.imageshack.us/img178/3803/s2dimpsv15000.png

I entered the tube, but off-centered, so you can't see Sonic: http://img340.imageshack.us/img340/1415/s2dimpsv15001.png

    In the tube again: http://img545.imageshack.us/img545/4650/s2dimpsv15002.png

Then, I got stuck in that tube! http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/2581/s2dimpsv15003.png

Sonic standing on the tube: http://img175.imageshack.us/img175/3873/s2dimpsv15004.png

I was jumping, but I coudn't get out of that tube!
