Thanks you for your opinions. I'll surely work on the Flickies behavior, layout flaws and add more levels. I'll also make the boss behave more like the original one with fixed bouncing. About the flickies sfx - I don't have any idea on how to work with S2 Driver and idk which other I should use (I didn't bothered about it for this version as initially it was going to be a minihack)? Could any of you recommend me a good replacement? I'm also probably gonna do a music options menu where you could customize if you want to use Sonic 2, Sonic 3D MD or Sonic 3D Saturn (not sure about these as I can't do music) music. I also present to you the planned level order.

Thanks you all for the videos. I hope you had fun playing it.

A few ideas and notes, if you are interested, which were discussed on MarkeyJester's stream:
    • When you have a shield and get hurt, the flickies still scatter. They should still stay with you as they do in Sonic 3D (if I remember correctly).
    • The flickies have their own mini shields when you have a shield in Sonic 3D. Any possibility of adding them?
    • Would you consider disabling Time Over in this hack, similar to Sonic 3D where if you take over 10 minutes, it just says 'Time Taken: Too Long'?
    • The boss hit counter is currently set to 8. In Sonic 3D, this first boss has only 5 hits. Any chance of changing that?
    • Any chance of the boss actually using a spikeball (From Spring Yard Zone, for instance) with the simple 5 bounces behaviour of Sonic 3D (whereby the bounces are always the same height/distance)? The current behaviour is nice, but it seems a little too intelligent for a first boss.
I really do want to see this hack continue. I've played it over quite a few times, and I thoroughly enjoy it. I would love to see more.

I played this hack on stream, and my god, you sir are fantastic!

The accuracy is beautiful, the boss was totally unexpected too!

A few minor things, one, I got stuck between a wall and a rock, two, I lost my flickies when getting hurt and still having a shield, it would be awesome if the flickies had a small sheild around them like in Sonic 3D. I have a few other minor things, but that's not what's important right now. What's here is an example of a perfectly brilliant project, and I strongly suggest you continue it. I am also hoping that amphobius donates his Saturn renditions of Sonic 3D towards this project, because it fucking well deserves it!!

    Well done, sir, well done!

Thanks you for positive feedback and some ideas.
    • As for the flickies, tbh I didn't played S3D recently, so I thought that you lose them after each hit. I'll fix that.
    • I don't know ifI'll be able to do small shields for Flickies, but I'll try.
    • Time Over: I'm planning to do a rings-and-lives-only HUD like Sonic 3D then results on separate screen and of course disable the TO.
    • Boss: I planned set it to 5 hits, but I thought that 8 may be better. However if you prefer 5 hits, I'll do it. The same goes with spikeball.
    • Music: As stated few posts above, I'm planning to do 3 soundtracks for player to choose. As for now however, I don't know which sound driver I should choose for replacement to the S2 one.
I'm very glad you liked my work. I'm also implementing a main menu & save.

Just wanted to throw out there that if you need any further help with art, let me know and I'll do whatever I can for you. Your project is something I'd hate to see being held back because of minor issues with color palettes and such.

    My only two problems are:

    * I absolutely HATE Sonic 2's graphics. They just seem less lively than Sonic 1's and less pretty than Sonic 3K's.

    * I figured a 2D-style take on Sonic 3D Blast would feature either the same graphics from S3D or be inspired by them. Like maybe a 16-bit version of Sonic Blast's art style.

I haven't played the game yet but if it's half as good as it seems I'll enjoy it despite the overly blah vanilla Sonic 2 art. But seeing as this is a Painto creation and that he (she? ze?) always does beautiful work. Seriously, Painto's like Sonic hacker royalty.

It's called Westside Island, not Flickies' Island. What do people expect?

EDIT: This post was only aimed at the above one.

I'm not too sure if that post included my own, but I will say that my post comments were merely suggestions and ideas. I'm not expecting Painto to make a 1:1 scaled 2D version of Sonic 3D. However, he has already shown in his last post that he's willing to listen to suggestions and take them on board.

I do think that some of the comments criticising the game play and graphics are a bit silly though. The graphics are from Sonic 2 as this is set on Westside Island, and the game play style is taken from Sonic 3D, so if you have any issues with that, it should be aimed at Sonic Team instead.

Very nice, I managed to try this hack and all I can really say is echo most people's thoughts on this. I had started something like this years ago(Never shown it to anyone since I never went far into it), so I'm glad someone is going through with it. Do you think it could be possible to have a tractor beam warped sonic out after each act like 3D?. I think of it like Sky sanctuary's teleporters. It shouldn't be too tricky provided you could find the art space for the tractor beam. I look forward to your progress.

Thanks for even more opinions! I'm glad that at least some people got the point of the hack. To clear all existing misunderstandings and avoid future ones, the next release and further ones will change the name to Sonic 2 Blasted. As now I didn't had much time, I didn't made much progress, but I should show something fixing your reported issues this or next week. Once again thanks for feedback =)

This new name of your hack has THE BLAST PROCESSING! (no pun intended, I really think it's more catchy and 20% cooler than previous name! Good job, Painto!) :D

Much better name in my opinion. Sonic 2D Blast just made me think of the game gear sonic blast.

I've said it before, but damn this hack is FUN!
Really hoping you will continue to work on it later, and can get other skilled people (coders, sprite artist etc.) involved with your project, to make your idea come to fruition.

It can be tricky to find some Flickies. Perhaps something that can aid that search, such as sign posts?

Okay, as I've finally found some time, I started fixing issues you reported (when I'll finish the layout and flicky issues, there likely will be a video) as well as adding new features (part of them not working atm). Anyway, few pictures.
I've edited the title screen to reflect the name change (the "BLASTED" text is sliding to the title after Sonic appears)

    [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]
I've made a Main Menu (left image) based on the Sonic 2 menu screens in which you can see your progress (center picture), change options (right image), erase your data (you'll be warned), play the tutorial level (I'll probably reuse The Main Zone™ or a S1 zone I'm not going to use in-game), unlockables menu (these probably will be bonus levels + Tails and even maybe Knuckles, idk) and see the credits (unlocked after passing the game). Hints from options menu is a response to hard-to-find Flickies (I'll use MGZposts for it I guess). The soundtack selection will also change the menus BG.

I've edited the boss according to your notes - SYZ spikeball + 5 hits. Also no score & time on the HUD, like S3D.

Like S3D, I moved the results to separate screen. Special Bonus is like Tails/Knuckles bonuses from S3D. Not sure if I should keep Perfect Bonus, change it to Flicky Bonus or have both. The best time is saved and used in the progress menu, where it's used for unlockables, as well the rings number is added to the Total Rings count.
That's all atm. As mentioned at the beginning, I have left to do Flickies movement and layout issues as well as making few things to work.
    C&C, as always, welcome.

    Painto.

Wow, that is some improvement. I'm really looking forward to more.

You should do a demo where Sonic runs with some flickies then jumps making the screen go white and then viola! Title Screen =P

Also, I think Flicky Bonus would be better. Does S3D have Perfect Bonus? I really cannot remember.

No, it doesn't but I've kept it because Sonic 2. I also think about making difficultl levels, but idk if these could work with future levels. Also glad you liked it.

This is looking really good. I think the boss is looking much better with that spike ball, as it fits rather well. (I hope the bouncing has been changed to reflect the original's predictable pattern, but this is more a personal preference thing).

Also, I see 'Special Bonus', but I expect it to just be tied to the Special Stages through star posts, and not through finding Tails/Knuckles?

EDIT: Painto, please don't sign off your posts. We can see that you've made them, and it's kind of redundant to add it. You've only recently started doing it, also.

Yeah, the ball is bouncing like in S3D. Sadly, I tried to do Sonic/Tails Special Stage entry (depending on character you play) but I had few problems with making it work correctly, such as restoring the flickies and deleting destroying enemies) so I'm keeping the starposts from between sections for it. Oh, and sorry for that "Painto." thing, but... I recently feel that my post end suddenly and look unfinished, ik it's dumb.
