Edit: the hack is now released. Grab it here!
or read the history below. That also works.

    ---------------------------------------------------------

Let's start with a bit of a backstory. Remember my hack, Sonic 2 ReMastered? Well, there's one little detail many people didn't know: the 80% of the hack was done just two weeks before the contest itself. And recently I had an idea...

What if I could pull off a similar thing, but with Sonic 1?

    Today I present to you,
    THE ALMIGHTY 16 DAY CHALLENGE!
    (i guess lol)
Well It's kind of obvious really. I am going to attempt to do a decent hack in just 16 days. Every day, starting from tomorrow (2nd of August), I will publish an update on the hack here, and hopefully on the morning of 19th of August, I will have a nice playable build.

Or, you know, maybe I will just shit myself and do a terrible job. That can also happen.

    Whatever. READY, SET, DIE!!!

Please say I'm not the only one who does this before the development starts.

I look forward to what you come up with! This reminds me of the time when another member created the 30 day challenge hack. I can't remember his username...

    Oh look, an updade!

    Hooray!!!

Well... there's nothing much right now. I just quickly made some art for Breezing Shores Zone (name suggested by Misinko). I still need to add clouds to the background, and I will add flowers after the importing process because I'm a very odd person.

I was planning to abstain from using my trial posts before I could show off some stuff of a project I'll start soon but man, I can't leave this thread without saying this looks so beautiful. Good luck, dude.

Holy flicky, that looks good, I'm loving every bit of it, the grass, the background (albeit a bit empty :p) and the sand looks pretty good too.
The water has a really appealing palette, however, as much as I like the art I think it looks a little dry color-wise, tho it's understandable because of the background's color.
As for the boxes, well, they look neat.
Overall, I'm looking forward to seeing this getting done with such good work behind it.

Wow. What impresses me the most is the detail put into the sand. I also noticed that you made it so the horizontal and vertical springs have differing art that allows both to make use of the horizontal blur that occurs when playing on hardware.

I'd really like to know how you can do this in the span of a day. I don't think I'm nearly as efficient when hacking. It's most likely because of a lack of focus.

That one is a bit bland. After learning how to use SonLVL, I imported most of the stuff I had made yesterday. Yay.

I need to work harder. Hopefully the next update won't be as dissapointing.

Huh, I've actually been wondering how to import tiles to SonLVL. Good job though, looks great and crisp.

Self explanatory. Made the brand new title card, brand new HUD, fixed monitors, finished the level background, made the first section of the layout. I also started to work on semi-new badniks, altho that is not shown here.

Remember I said I didn't have time to write the text? I wanted to (finally!) eat.

Quite impressed in the quality of this in just three days so far.

Take note people. This is the kind of stuff we want to see more of in the Sonic Hacking Contest.

Okay, I'm trying to save posts on my project but holy moly this is fucking gorgeous.

Now this is how you make a hack in 16 days without lazily swapping palettes.

How did you even draw all that in three days?!

The sand in the first picture doesn't look right when they keep switching direction. The second picture with the sand is definitely more pleasing. I'm intrigued to see how those title cards transition. Great work! I'm keeping my eye on this one!

As of now, it's like the standard title card. Sorry, I suck at code.

I hope you realise that not everyone has a gold finger like Mr. Cat or MarkeyJester or VAdaPEGA and the likes.
In fact, IMO, this really discourages new blood, which would then lead to only the same people participating in SHC over and over again.
I want the hacking scene to evolve and not screech to a complete halt.
