This may not be a splash screen contest but that's a good idea...

If you knew the implications of that, then you wouldn't advise it =P

1 week to go, be sure that anything you submit is sent to me "before" the 10th, anything late I won't accept.

    Times up!

So it's the end of the competition, and I recieved quite a few entries suprisingly, some were cool, others not as much, but it was awesome seeing what all of you (as a scene) are capable of and what your tallents are. I'll save the blabber and get to the results.

    The following winners are:

    • StephenUK
    • Unnamed hack
    • What won the screen for this hack was the nicely constructed level design, although unfinished, it's clean, well detailed, and puts good use of existing art without looking ugly.

    • Crash
    • Sonic MV
    • The technical aspects of this hack were rather impressive, certain unnamed features that are likely to lag or result in glitchy graphics, suprisingly didn't happen in this hack, it was generally organised in that respect.

    • CarrascoZX0
    • Sonic The Hedghog ZX
    • This hack's layouts were dull, some art designs were dull, and the technical areas were next to non-existant, but the music tracks (ported/imported/created) were nice, fitting, and didn't make my ears bleed, they didn't sound like a 2 minute job either, nice work!

    • D.A.Garden
    • Unnamed S3K hack
    • Now, I found this to be rather special, becuase of the amount of VERY clever layouts and object placements that I never thought possible, and the fact that it's S3K makes the job of laying out far more difficult that the first two Sonic games, the palette choices were nice too.

    • Hanoch
    • Sonic Ghosthog
    • I NEARLY didn't accept this one, but I ended up narrowing it down to the unique idea and the object modifications, I do wish the gameplay was a tad easier and slightly more fun, but eh.

Not everyone who entered won though, but there were one or two who were very close, but didn't quite make it, and they are:

    • Animemaster
    • Sonic 1 CD Edition
    • This was a hard one, the time travel stuff was really cool and the designs were good, but it was "extremely" buggy, collision issues, strange graphical bugs, and a lot more. and that was the problem I had with voting this, I would love to see this one succeed, but it would be very unfair to the other non-winners who's hacks were a lot more cleaner and bugless.

    • DeoxysKyorge
    • Sonic 1 Eggland
    • Very close, some good things but needs to be cleaned up a little more, and a lot of work looks like it was in need of.

The others who didn't win, sorry, better luck next time, but you have a hell of a long way to go before I myself can actually enjoy playing what you have to offer, of course, that doesn't mean that gaining the chance to use the screen is completely lost, it is now avaiable for all of those who are a "Pro User", so post with decency, respect your fellow members, don't do anything nasty or untrusting, be brilliant, and the staff may shift you to "Pro User" where the screen will be there for you to use.

Thanks to all the people who submitted, twas an interesting ride

Ah man.... the bugs really did kill it.... I worked till 11:30 as well =(. Oh well, thanks for the oppurtunity. Congratulations to those who one. I think there should be more competitions like this, to grab attention and get the community involved. Heck I'd even do a competition if I could actually offer something worth winning =P.

    May I ask a question?

From all you've seen, what are the most common weaknesses and strengths in hacks?

The most common weaknesses from most of the hacks I saw, it seems that keeping them bugless, glitchless and looking professional was the last thing on everyone's minds, a lot of people tend to work now, fix later. The biggest strengths however, were mainly the brilliant ideas applied to these hacks and how they were executed, most of them were pretty unique in their own ways, not your casual "Sonic 1 - S3K buggy edition", most people seemed to have picked up understanding assembly more than artistic design, or music and sound effects.

Funny you mention the use of existing art for my hack, as I spent most of yesterday removing and replacing nearly every piece of art from other games. The statues are staying though coz they look cool, but everything else from other games, including the entire background has gone.
