I seem to fail miserably when it comes to music. My latest blunder has come when I tried porting music using ESE II music porter.

I tried porting Sonic 2's EHZ to Sonic 1 GHZ. I placed the porter settings to Sonic 2 to Sonic 1, labeled the destination and source as Sound Files, ran build.bat and when I played GHZ this is what I get:

And then we have some pyscho colours ending with a nice teal colour

And the game becomes fail. (I'm not too worried, I have backups, it's just that everytime I try editing music, I fail.)

Two things. First off, when you use ESE2's sound importer make sure the source is not a sound file (in other words leave it unchecked.) Second make sure the destination is a sound file and label it as a binary (example musicxx.bin) and be sure you put it in the "sound" folder of your disassembly. If you still get those screens, then you're probably doing something else wrong.

Well, since the source file WAS a sound file, I left it checked. I'll try getting it straight from the ROM

EDIT: Heh....Music doesn't like me. After telling ESEII to get it straight from the ROM, GHZ works fine, but now I'm without music. Sound FX works fine though, just can't get the music to play. The music plays fine in the non-edited music levels. Boss and invincibility music plays.

Hm.... you must be doing something wrong. Are you using the first ESE's sound importer? its easier than his newer version. i've use it and successfully retrieved the options menu music from sonic2. You may already know this but here's what i do. Get a clean (un edited) sonic 2 rom, and put it as your source file unchecked. Then get your sound file like, music81 for ghz hill as the destination, put it checked then choose sonic 2 to sonic1 and then emerald hill. save and then build. It should work then. The only way it may not play if you were using ESE's newer sound importer, which is harder to use for beginners, and if you port it wrong it won't play the sound you want.

They are both the same except that the newer is using a DAC conversion. I suggest you to use ESEII instead of I becasue then you will get noises in the dac channel. Look at the music hacking guide in sonic retro and in ESE2, convert the toms to timpanis. That's all you have to do, nothing complicated.

I'm using ESEII importer. I'm using a clean Sonic 2 Rom. I tried checking the button from Sonic 2 when I used the .bin files from the split, and that gave me a bunch of funky colors. I left the button unchecked when I used the whole ROM. I clicked Sonic 2 to Sonic 1 as the porting type, and I clicked EHZ (it asked me to label the music file) I left the button checked for the destination file as that is the .bin file for GHZ music.

Edit: Well, I figured out what my problem was and fixed it, but now I have another. I have the EHZ music playing in GHZ, but it's playing way too fast! The only instance of speeding music up in my ASM is at the speed shoes object. How do I fix this?

Ah! well this is due to the tempo playing too fast, you need to slow it down. In other words you will need some basic hex skills, and an understanding of music.(basic stuff check the guide here or on soniretro) basically find the 04 and 05 byte of the song in hex,(at the begining of the music file) and edit it to make it faster or slower.
