Why are there no hacks of Sonic CD ?

I was thinking earlier about how hacking is getting slower in our community. I was wondering why there are absolutely no hacks based on the Sonic CD game as a base instead of Sonic 1 , 2 or 3. It seems strange that nobody has hacked Sonic CD.

Well, there is no disassembly of Sonic CD as far as I'm concerned, and if someone has made one, they haven't released it yet. How do you expect someone to hack a game if there is no disassembly? Trying to hack a game without a disassembly is like trying to start a fire without a match; NEAR IMPOSSIBLE. (NOTE: That only goes for Genesis, Master System, Game Gear, and Mega CD games. All others do not necessarily require a disassembly.)

Yes, because nobody hacked Sonic 1 until its disassembly came out.

Ah ok , I myself cant get my head around hacking, but I know enough to understand what you mean . I enjoy playing other people's work mostly. Thanks for the quick reply

    Kind regards

There have in fact been hacks of Sonic CD, namely Sonic CD++. Stealth also ported Palmtree Panic Zone 1 Present to a MegaDrive ROM.

The main issues are increased difficulty without a disassembly, and the fact that every level is essentially its own game, with lots of duplicate code and sprites.

Some things have been disassembled. The Rollbug in Sonic Boom was ported from Sonic CD.

Why hasnt anyone made a dissasembly for Sonic CD just out of interest , is it a matter of software dissassemblers not having been coded for Sonic CD. If the first 3 games have been dissasembled it cant be too difficult to do the same for CD , can it? In regards to the dissasembler software question, would it require the person doing the dissasembly to code a new program like similar to the stuff Markey Jester has done for pallete changing and sprite stuff?

There is no disassembly because the Mega CD is much more complex than the Mega Drive alone, and

Ah so it is possible just very very complex

Sonic CD++ is the only hack I know of Sonic CD. But answer me this: Why are there no hacks of Sonic Spinball?

I'm assuming , the same reason for Sonic CD ; a lack of disassembly

Actually, there is a disassembly of Sonic Spinball, but the problem is, it's in IDB format. That's probably why Sonic Spinball hasn't been made more awesome (read: hacked) by now.

Couldn't one in theory make a Sonic Spinball sequel in the form of a pinball-based hack of Sonic 2? I'm not sure if it's possible, but simply just copy the pinball elements from Casino Night Zone into the remaining stages and pretty much restructure them so each Zone (no acts) is basically like a level from Sonic Spinball?
I don't know crap about the tech side of hacking so I'm just asking.

I've made a mini hack of Sonic CD, but of course I used a Hex editor to do so. xP Also Sonic Spinball wasn't written in 68k asm iirc, instead it was written in C and I think Andlabs' disassembly isn't completed so i'm not sure even if you have IDA pro how useful it is. Also the physics in the game are slightly different than the other genesis games I assume, so you'd probably have to tweak the physics a bit in Sonic 2. But the pinball elements in CNZ could possibly be a good start to making a Sonic 2 Sonic Spinball edition. :V

Oh, it's possible, alright. And if you really want me to, I guess I could be bothered to whip up a quick PoC (Proof of Concept) explaining just that.

You dudes really don't know how long it takes to make a disassembly. These projects could take years.

You need to do some more research before saying stuff like this. Why, there are lots of hacks out there of Sonic 1 and 2 and others before disassemblies came out. Hey, even I did one, it's old and shit I know but still...

Oh yes, I'm not disagreeing with the fact that disassemblies doesn't help.  Just disagreeing with you saying it's near impossible =P
