I just got this idea for a new Sonic Hack. It's basiaclly Sonic the Hedgehog, but you die if you collect 50 rings, and you die if you get hit with zero rings. I think this would be an interesting hack because you would have to stay balanced between getting hit and consuming rings at the same time.

There's just a couple things to point out here.

    1. Easy strategy to beat the game: Just take damage from enemies when needed, collecting loose rings won't be much of a problem. Continue on through the level and repeat if ring count goes up. The idea could use more substance to keep the player engaged, otherwise they'll lose interest quickly.

    2. Idea topics are something that's frowned upon in these areas. If you're looking to get into hacking, take a look around the site at some guides for help getting started.

This would be a good learning exercise for a beginning hacker, you should try to do it yourself.

...but since it only took 5 minutes, here's a rom that does what you ask, it only takes 3 extra lines of assembly.

    Clicky clicky

MushroomGuru, what you could do is remove all the hazards/ring monitors, start with 50 rings, replace the rings' art with something dangerous (i.e. floating water mines) and make them function like rings, but have them take away a ring instead of add. When you hit 0 rings, hitting another mine will cause you to die, so it's basically avoiding the rings. Can YOU complete GHZ ringless? =p

EDIT: That reminds me, give a perfect ring bonus at the end of a level if none are lost. You could also increase the current ring bonus to reflect the fact that you can't get more than 50 rings.
