Sonic 2 GG AutoDemo Discussion

It's cool seeing something like this and thinking of how when this proto was made anything was still possible with the game, nevertheless still being able to see what could've been is still interesting in itself.

I like how now we have extremely early interesting looks into Sonic 2 on BOTH the Genesis and Game Gear, but what I'm more interested in is seeing prototypes of Sonic 1 and Sonic 3, I want to see what could've been the Sonic 1 we know today and what Sonic 3 was like before it was decided to be split into 2 games (well we kind of have that, the Sonic 3C ROMs but that's not what I mean).

Though I can assume that the Sonic 1 prototypes are under lock and key by SoJ (If they still exist), and the same for the Sonic 3 protos because of the controversy that surrounds Sonic 3. Strange that even though there was that big STI proto dump a long while back but early Sonic 3 was no where to be found even though it was developed there.

One can dream I guess, even though I probably share that dream with a lot of the Sonic online community

 

Looking at LooneyDude's avatar at how it's animated, I think it's definitely laughing sprites.

I dunno what THAT could have been used for however.

 

Maybe for S3 style endings? Perhaps they scrapped it because those sprites didn't quite fit.

 

Sort of an odd find. While dumping Sonic's graphics for the sprite sheet, I came across this:



Now, I understand you are probably like, "These are just Sonic's normal skidding sprites, silly!"

Well, I get that, but this is a mirrored set of duplicate sprites located around the unused beta sprites from before.

So... Hooray for wasted space?

 

To be fair TheStoneBanana, in the final, there were two sets of sprites for each sprite.

One facing Left and the other facing right. I found this out when I was hacking sprite art long ago in the final game.

 

Ah, ok then. I just though it was odd because it was mixed in with the normal sprites.

Looks like that is part of the Title Screen.

 

Funny, considering that I searched the game up and down for more unused stuff.

Oh well, I guess I have to look harder, now.

Oh great. Now Chuckles has his own game. Which makes it technically part of Sonic, which makes it technically part of Sonic Retro.
