I've been using the same hexadecimal editor now since somewhere around 2004. It's an old one from 2000 by HHD software, and while it's great and simplistic, there are a few issues.

The first known issue is incompatibility with recent operating systems (it still works, but the right click menu option doesn't get added like it should, and even after manually editing the registry to place it in, there are a few minor issues with loading more than one file). There's also the issue of the memory space being reserved is only twice the size of the file you opened, making extending the size of a file, a bit of a hassle.

I recently tried their latest version which is pretty damn awesome in its own right, the problem is, simple functions such as comparing one file with another for un-matching data, appears to be locked out, and requires being paid for before you can use it. I don't mean to sound like a tight ass, but I expect my hex editor to come with that function for free.

What do you guys use? Anything to recommend? I'm currently looking for something compatible with Windows 7 64-bit. But at the same time, isn't all in my face filled with functions I don't give a shit about.

I use XVI32 from Sonic retro. I'm not sure if it has all the functions you'd need, though.

I just checked out HxD, it looks rather decently, unfortunately, it doesn't have a right click menu shell extension. I kinda need that to hex edit files on the fly.

Neither does XVI32 by the looks of things.

I use Hex Workshop 5.1.4. Would use the newer 6.x builds, but I'm not paying for another licence, when my current one should have transfered over. Anyway, it works perfectly for me and I'm running Win7 Pro x64 SP1.

What restrictions are there to not having a license?

Same here, I use Hex Workshop for comparing files when trying to disassemble a game. It's the best way to figure out if an instruction needs a (pc) for a jsr (the lea patch I have doesn't fix jsrs). Damn you IDA Pro...

Hex Workshop. You could just search for a 'portable' version of it.

30 day trial. Cracks are available, though.
