This started out as a n00b hack, just taking a couple things off of the SCHG How To: guides, but as I learned more of the way of the world, it turned into something a little more. Now, me making this thread does not mean that this hack is finished, it's still a WIP (although I'm sure most people know that already)

I know that this is my first serious project, and I know that I shouldn't expect it to be the next megamix. (Well, it's good enough to not be in the beginner's section of hacktube, so I'm flattered) But it's definitely going to be something I am proud of. And while me making the eggman monitor hurt sonic is by no means the most creative idea I have ever had, I do have some very interesting, and creative things in store.

Credits go to Qjimbo, for his guides on setting up an s1 disasm, Chimpo for his SonMapEd guides, Lightning and Puto for their Spin Dash guides (I'm not going to fully put in the animations and the dust until later) Stephen for his dynamic palette guide, and Selbi, Animemaster, Nineko, and anyone else who helped answer my questions.

So what's in store? Well, if you played the game on hacktube you would know one....

The Sonic Slide 'N Punch ™

How does it work? It's akin to running on a bare floor in socks, and then sliding. If you stop pressing buttons while Sonic is running, Sonic will continue sliding in his "surf" animation. He will slow down, and eventually stop. While he is sliding, you can jump like normal, or continue running! This makes caterkillers and yadrins no problem!

Oohs? Ahhs? Screams from the lack of Background? (don't worry that's only in that build, I fixed the background)

    Other nice things include:

An unlimited S monitor- although I might make it limited if I feel like it. In the build I have on hacktube, it's right in the beginning for everyone to try.

New dynamic palettes - yay! Generic "Palette changes as time goes on!" check it out:

New art! While I'm not that great at level art, I am making new costumes for old badniks, and some new messages for SYZ. Check out the SYZ Yadrin:

New Layouts! I think only SoNineko is the only hack that can pull off not having this feature.

My entire life - Go from my backyard, to school, back to my backyard, onwards towards the bike trail, to the city, back to the bike trail, back to school, back to the bike trail, to South Side Bethlehem. Watch as the seasons change, the world does too. Watch a broken down steel mill transform into a casino, and learn the Secrets of the Night Sky.

Two layouts per act This is only partially implemented. If level select is not put in, you will get one layout. If it is, you will get another. My plan is to get the level layout to change, and to have the layouts random

    Levels include:

Summer Zone (formally GHZ): Watch the seasons go from Fall to Summer

Marble Zone (name not yet figured out) A fiery level that resembles nothing that's actually in my life.

    South Side Zone
( a mixture of SYZ and SBZ) lots of surprises for you there! A casino and an old steel mill...

Canal Zone (Formally LZ) - Travel to the city the athletic way! Take the bike trail that runs between the canal and the river. Can you make it through in record time, or is ten minutes not long enough?

Yozora Zone (formally SLZ) - Sonic crosses over into my fantasies! Will he be visited by the Man in the Moon? Or will Light succeed in his evil plans (not a death note reference)

Please note that most of this is not implemented in the hacktube build. The hacktube version is outdated, but the new build isn't good enough to be played.

Most updates will either be posted here, on the General Project Screenshot thread, or in the form of a question in the Discussion and Q&A.

Just asking, did you change sonic's color? He looks......Purple

Are you going put any ASM etc... Extra characters, import levels?

Also while doing the "slide 'N Punch" can you get hit performing the move?

I hope you continue and make progress on this hack.

I did change Sonic's color, to what I saw as a darker blue. If it's not liked, I'll fix it.

Well even the new move is using ASM, along with changing the title cards, and creating the feature that right now is ruining the background.

As for extra characters, I was planning on putting in Tails, but I decided against it, since I started putting him in there too early, before I knew anything about anything really. I may plan to pick him back up, but even still, I'll have to some how get a flying and swimming code. So at this point, no extra characters, because when I do get them in, all they'll be is Sonic in a costume.

As for imported levels, I do have plans for that. Maybe not the entire level, but import some art from Sonic 2.

Alas, he doesn't unless he gets hit by a projectile like a buzzbomber. I'm planning on fixing it so that if something comes up from behind him, Sonic will get hurt.

I will =) For the time being.

    W00T!

    So check out

    -New Palette for SLZ: http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/1943/s1built006.png

    - New Palettes for GHZ 3, MGZ, and SYZ 2

    - The old palette I had for MZ looked too much like palettes from other hacks, so I decided to keep the original scheme, but darker

-The old palette I had for SYZ was burning my eyes... toned the green down a bit

    - A new monitor known as the RAF box... what does it do? Find out!

    - A very simple spin dash is implemented, but it has to be earned as well as Slide-n-Punch ™

GHZ3's palette looks a little too bright, MZ's colours aren't meshing well, it looks odd....Your palettes are close to being perfect, just needing a few tweaks.

I haven't played the layout (as I can't), but good luck.

Alright, I'm bumping this because I want some more feedback

    I changed GHZ 3 again:

    And Marble Zone:

I was also playing around with SonEd2's tile editor, since I'm not good at making new art from scratch, I thought maybe I could make a new pattern over the existing art.

It took me a while just to get this far, but I decided to get feedback, because if other people don't think it looks good, then I shouldn't have made the effort.

Here's what I have so far for GHZ:

Should I continue with that pattern, or should I scrap it?

Okay dude, I'm not trying to be fucked up or anything.... But all I see in this hack is pallete changes and a new move Sonic can do... And then you bump this topic or made a update and all you did was pallete changes??? And the palletes don't really look good... Really?! I guess I can understand cause I was like you too... Shit, everybody was... But just a tip... When you make an update... Don't make a very simple tiny update... No one will really care... I know I didn't... =P

    Make an exciting one! lol!

As for the pattern you did for GHZ... It looks an awful like DalekSam's Mobius Adventures GHZ patterns... Why don't you try putting in some new custom art...

And fix your palletes... Especially the grass of your GHZ (Afternoon). It looks terrible...

But for some reason I have a good feeling that this hack might turn out really good in the future... I hope I'm right... =\

    Good luck...

I agree and disagree for a few reasons.

Personally I don't mind seeing little updates though I do think just one pallete change is not worth it.

But you can't expect exicting things from a new hack so what else can he post to make sure they is doing ok?

Anyway I do think the new pallete idea looks a little odd since it stands out from the rest of the tiles (2nd picture).

Looks like it's coming on ok though so next time you want to show us a update give us a little more to look over.

I think the best things for small updates like this, is to post the in the general screenshots thread instead. And if you have a more major update, then post it in your topic.

Alright, sorry. Irixion made a comment about the palettes, so I changed them and just wanted opinions.

The pattern, I see is not liked, so I'm glad I posted it, to get feedback, although I you are correct, and I probably should have done general screenshots instead of bumping my topic. I am sorry, and I see what you mean Carrasco.

As for importing my own art, I just kind of... suck at making my own art, which is why I was drawing over the tiles.

Double post, but I hope this counts as a large update because I have a new game play feature.

    Explanation:

Since I started this hack, I wanted to be able to have the game different each time it is played. I didn't know how object placement and level layouts worked, and it ended up not loading the background, not loading the foreground, or both. After giving up on it for a while, I tried it again. I haven't been able on getting the layout to change yet, but I am able to get the object placements to. Right now, it only works with the activation of the level select code, because I can't get it to jump to RandomNumber, plus it's easier to test that both layouts work.

In the videos I just have some minor monitor swaps and block to spikes swap, but it's the concept and feature itself is what I'm trying to show

I'm close to getting the layouts to work, and once I do I'll need to Randomize it, and then keep the non-corresponding layouts from loading (i.e. Object Position 1 loading with Level Layout 2)

Since Carrasco is so critical (and I really don't like it when he's being completely critical and not helping a newbie), maybe it's my turn to be critical of Carrasco. Not trying to backseat mod, but damn.

You're clearly blind. The last image shows a loop after a GHZ Island--that does not exist in S1.

    It's palette not pallete.

Gee, that is SO helping him improve his colours!

This is really irrelevant to anything. >_> Oh, just a tip....don't use ....so many damn.... dots ...

lol!!111 Define exciting. I don't even get what you mean.

The pattern is great. And genius, that is custom art.

You already said that. I see no constructive criticism.

Now, to get to the actual post--I can't view the new video so mind posting a few screenies?

Here's a tip: When editing palettes, edit all of the items' associated colours the same amount.

So say you want to make the grass darker, edit all of the grass' colours by 1 or 2. There's an inconsistency that you're giving us, which is why your palettes aren't looking so great. Start from scratch if you'd like.

Oh you liked the pattern? I removed it already, but I was hoping for feedback from the video about the new feature.

If you can't see the video, I have an example of what I'm talking about:

    Act 1 version 1

    Act 1 version 2

These images are no longer the actual layout, but I did that for a quick check to see if both versions worked.

Irixion, thank you for constructive criticism.
