As there's been interest in music lately (well, dunno so much here :x but around the sonic hacking community in general), I thought I'd get off my arse and finally do something I'd been meaning to do for a while. s1smps2asm. Essentially, I've been writing music in ASM rather than a hex editor for a long while now, and I'd always wanted a program to convert from hex to ASM to make things easier.

So I decided to make one. :U

.. and before you ask, no, I'm not releasing it yet. It's too early, and it's also still fairly nonunderstandable. However, proof that is does actually produce an output of something:

EDIT: Mirror at http://cinos.gunsha.com/music81.asm as Dreamhost is doing mainenance on hapisan.com's server

    Hay Green Hill Zone. :x

So.. ja. Look out for this. :U

(By the way, don't expect a fancy GUI. it's a C program, not a C++ program. Command line ftw.)

So, what exactly is the difference between writing music in ASM and Hex anyway?

Automatic pointer calculation for one. That alone makes it much better, IMO.
