Sonic the Hedgehog 1 ~ Virtual Boy Edition

(Disclaimer: This hack is in no way, shape, or form, stereoscopic 3D. Sorry!)

    DOWNLOAD

A little bit of boring backstory here. Basically, @Bakayote had suggested a ROM of Sonic 1 that would be completely monochrome (and later he added that it should look like a VB game). Coincidentally, about a week before, I had been working on a little routine which would calculate exact monochrome versions of existing palettes loaded into RAM. The routine itself is just being used for a very small part in a main hack of mine, so I decided to let it strut it's stuff here and make the game look like a Virtual Boy game. No actual palettes were modified within the ROM in the making of this hack-- well, er, except the SEGA screen. I modified it's palette on purpose because it looks cooler.
For the record, this hack was made in the span of about 3 hours, so there's bound to be hiccups here and there. Enjoy! :D

Damn you TheStoneBanna. You're TOO FAST! I also developed my own virtual boy edition, but I can see now, it's pointless. At least, I beated Bakayote to hack Tails Adventures as a first! Good job, I hate you now! :D In all seriousness I really like this hack.

Edit: Now I really afraid about my WIP Sonic 1: Windows Edition. Lesson learned and GOTTA GO FAST to finish it! :D

Apparently, the horrible color palette is all you need to start feeling sick

Great job, can't wait to see how this routine is used in your other project!

Somebody'll port it eventually, it is virtually inevitable now, even though it is not expected anytime soon.
The only downside though is that if we did get it, the Rerecording Emulator known as VBjin, to my knowledge, does not use All Red for its display, you instead either get All Pink, Grayscale, or the Red/Blue 03D Glasses display effect added to the former two, we would have to manually edit in the All Red display to the footage by means of colour shifting in video editors; then again, I am not familiar with the other Virtual Boy emulators that are out there, I have stuck with VBjin since 2012 because it's the only emulator that I could find for making Input Movie Files for Longplays and I haven't changed up since (speaking of which, I need to get back to that Virtual Boy Wario Land Longplay that I was working on in '12, haven't touched that in a few years now).

They already made Sonic 1 and 2 in 3D, there's definately hope ;)

Worst case scenario, just get some red shades and a 3DS :p

I just played though your hack Mopedude. I didn't expect much of it before playing it on how you presented it.

Glitched animations/scrambled backgrounds/"lul drugs"/noobspeak is not really funny, maybe to you it is, but it's annoying to a bunch of other people here including myself. Please don't waste our time producing anything like this garbage again and focus on making something actually worth playing.

I made it as a metaphor as what everyone sees me as.

If there was a competition to see who can make the most corrupted version of a Sonic game, then I think I would win!

Introducing an old hack I made in 2013 when I got bored...

    SOONIK 2!

Playing it is huge waste of time and you shouldn't really do it, but if you're REALLY that curious, have fun.

Seems ironic for you to say that considering you weren't expecting much in the first place. If you don't think the presentation sets expectations high, why spend the time playing it at all? Criticism is one thing, but that last line goes a bit overboard, don't you think?

'Pana der Hejhog' presented itself as garbage. 'Megahack: Ultra Edition' did as well. Both purposefully set expectations low so that you're caught by surprise when the game turns out to be pretty good.

So... it's safe to say that he had perfectly good reason to give MopeDude's hack a shot, even if initial expectations were low.

Is it the purpose of every hacker who set expectations low for their hacks to come out with a big surprise in the end? That doesn't change the fact that he expected little from it in the first place. Mind you, he's got every right to try out the hack as he pleases, but he went in expecting nothing much from it. If the hack failed to deliver in entertainment, then it should've come as no surprise. Bakayote's post suggests he was miffed by what was ultimately his own choice to play it saying things like "Please don't waste our time producing anything like this garbage again and focus on making something actually worth playing.". He's under no obligation to like the hack, but acting high-and-mighty about it is pushing the difference between a simple critique and outright lashing.

Okay, maybe I was a bit harsh. But still, I was pointing out that it wasn't a really good hack and that he should try making a ROM hack that's a bit more creative rather than just glitching stuff up.
That's pretty much what I meant anyway...

But this is "RANDOM"/ mini hack thread, so I think we shouldn't expect masterpieces here... Or I'm wrong?

Fair enough. I'd hate for anyone to think that I was not supportive of their right to an opinion. In fact, your first post would have been just fine as is minus the last sentence. I'd just like to know that people can tell the difference between posting a response versus posting a reaction. I'll drop the topic now.

Not necessarily, but I don't think you can automatically expect crap to come out of here either.
The hacks just range in quality.

It's one thing to criticise the hack, or even criticise the hacker, but to outright give negative orders on behalf of all of us on what not to do, is not acceptable. I'm certain by the apologetic response that it wasn't intentionally meant to sound that way, so we can forget about it.

No more on the subject please.
