I check this site almost daily. Nothing ever happens. For this reason, no-one visits. Because no-one visits, nothing ever happens. Because nothing ever happens, no-one visits. And so on, and so on.

There are too many staff members, some of them inactive. Note how their group is "Staff", not something like "Moderator". Therefore, the Staff group should be the people who moderate Hacktube. I think the inactive staff (including forum moderators) should be replaced with members who want to help the SSRG. There's no need for a lot of staff though.

Who would be more qualified for this than someone who sees the height and the lower end of hacking every year? I see every kind of hack from beginner hacks to advanced hacks and I use these criteria to make judging decisions that are overwhelmingly popular in each contest release. Sure, there are people who disagree, but an overwhelming number look to the hacking contest for the finest innovations in the community and are happy with what they see.

Developing rules for hacktube would certainly make it better. Perhaps segregate more advanced hacks from beginner hacks, judging by when the hack was made of course. Cyan's Sonic 1 Beta Hoax is trivial by today's standards, but it was an advanced hack for its day and should probably be classified as such as well as noting its age (more than ten years old at this point, I believe).

This is the proverbial "downward spiral", isn't it? It's imperative to add content, set expectations, and provide an atmosphere conducive to increased membership. If people come to a page with active content and something that catches their eye (like Hacktube or some other feature) they're much more likely to stay. The original SSRG did this by only allowing the elite of elite websites to be part of their whole. Sites like Damian's hacking websites, Jon Moran's custom levels site, Andre Dirk's Secrets of Sonic the Hedgehog, and ultimately Simon Wai's Sonic 2 Beta page (who's continuum exists today as Sonic Retro) set a standard for the cutting edge of Sonic Secrets (which was still a huge driving force at the time) and hacking innovations.

Whether that's the path we seek to take now is irrelevant. What IS relevant is the dire need for the SSRG to be something different (ie not stagnant), but still have an appeal to anyone that stumbles across the website. If Hacktube was really that important to the SSRG's continued activity, then perhaps it's good it went down. It's a wake up call. You can't place all your bets on one great idea. It takes constant innovations and expectations to set a reputation for a website.

I agree.. inactive staff won't really accomplish much <.<

After the thing iojnekns said, this is a contradiction. Of course, there are some staff members doing nothing, but there is nothing to moderate for the active ones, so staff gets inactive by default.

Oh and, I don't like the idea of taking down Hacktube. It may be true that SSRG bet too much on it, but taking it down will just result having even less activity, in my opinion.

I agree with Selbi, Hacktube's one of the few things (if not the only) SSRG is really known for. Getting rid of it would just make this, "yet another Sonic forum." Perhaps there should be a "Hacktube Moderator" group, or something like that.

I never said to take it down, just that it going down was a good wakeup call for the community. I agree we should get Hacktube up and running ASAP, but while we're working on that, perhaps we should come up with some other ideas and projects for the SSRG? This could help assist in keeping any further interest in the fate of this community from waning.

SonicVaan is gone. He left SSRG. This indirectly means there is no Hacktube mod group (the group itself is there, but no-one is in it).

Then in that case there is no need for such a group when there is a staff group which can do stuff related to Hacktube.

For some reason I doubt that Staff members can moderate Hacktube (another unnecesary thing, since Staff is meant to moderate anything), though I'm not sure.

There's no wiki on the SSRG. If you're talking about Retro's wiki, moderators have the same powers that a wiki sysop has, which is pretty much everything apart from administrative rights.

The first thing I thought of when reading the name of the topic was:

In the middle of the night

Miss Clavel turned on the light

and said, "Something is not right!"

    =P

But yeah, a lot of us aren't always here. I know that I haven't really been around to do much, what with life dishing out work left, right and centre. Also, in regards to staff roles, my Administrator position is an agreement between Ordos and myself. Mind you, I need not justify myself. =P

I mean, frequently activities from moderators are missing there.

    Solution:

    - Turn Hacktube Offline

    - Rules for Uploading

    - Site-Only Access users shouldn't have the ability to upload.

    - Slight integration with the board.

    - Controls for moderating.

Also, Darkon is a repeat-bandodging faggot.

That said, I'm not sure if Hacktube EVER was a good idea.

I agree with Selbi here, though Hacktube is a large part of SSRG though it needs strict guidelines and moderation. Otherwise we will just get shitty pallete and sprite hacks with no real effort involved, at all.

Also, perhaps a good few members who know what a good hack looks and feels like should take on the role.

And no, I do not want to take on said responsibility, either.

It was, but it's been raped ruined by ban-dodging beginners who think their hack's the greatest but it's a mere sprite/palette edit ( ocasionally a hack made of how-to guide stuff and nothing else), and people who load clean roms into the hacks section.

    Agreed, simple as that.

^ Pretty much that, I feel however that we all have solutions (*Ahem* sorry, CORRECT solutions), but nothing is really getting done, none of these solutions are actually being put into practice from what I can see (That's not to say I'm having a go at anyone or anything, just saying like for the record)

and I'm gonna be a cheeky fucker by saying, if you guys are looking for anyone to mod hacktube or whatever, then I don't mind taking on that responsibility (and now for me to run like hell =P).
