Anyone who is getting a red screen, just get a copy of a S1 Disassembly, and then try:

fixheadr.exe FloatingMarble.binAnyway, my opinion on the hack? It's alright for a first attempt, but has some strange design choices that make the player feel like they don't know what is going on. The player should be able to figure out that lava pits will shoot out fireballs. The player should know that walls are solid. The player should be able to tell whether something is dangerous or not, and whether something is solid.

In this hack, there seems to be a lack of conveyance. One random wall block generates a fireball. This is a problem, as you don't know about it, until you get hit. It's a cheap way to add difficulty. Being able to walk straight through a wall is bad (in most cases, unless it leads to a different path). This hack loops, but rather than looping using good level design, it just allows the player to walk back, through what is thought to be "solid" blocks.

It's good for a first attempt, but nowhere near to being finished. This is more of a test build, and I think you should have waited to publish it. Also, I would totally recommend using a disassembly to make your hack, rather than using just ROM hacking tools. It allows you to make changes to the code, which is helpful to fix bugs in the code. The spike glitch is present, which is annoying as the middle section relies on the glitch to be fixed.

Just saying but if you think people are being rude about new hackers being rude yourself with snide remarks don't really prove your case all that well.

Anyway for a first hack it's alright. Not too bad but not too good either. It's decent. I do hope you pursue bigger projects soon, I looking forward to playing them. =)

It gives me a red screen (Checksum Error) when opening the file in Fusion. I recommend not using Esrael Sonic Editor, it's an old program and outdated, if you really want to get into hacking Sonic 1 (and any of the classics for that matter) Download a dissassembly. Trust me, using programs such as ESE won't help you at all.  That's my advice.
