Are you up 2 to the task?
Long story short, I wanted to do a rewrite of this entire paragraph, because seriously, the screenshots are old, and I've changed lots of things and concepts. So, let's get into it.

This is Sonic 1 Competitive, a Sonic 2 Battle Race inspired multiplayer ROM hack of Sonic 1. Your goal is to race the other player in levels filled with spawning monitors and badniks, playing as either Sonic or his doppelganger, Metal Sonic. Reach the most score by the end of the level and you win!

There are two modes available: Racing Mode & Special Stage Mode. Racing Mode is the standard mode described above, whilst Special Stage Mode is an extra bonus challenge. You can go through each special stage, but each time the next Special Stage starts, one player controls Sonic and the other controls the camera. Try to troll each other, fake one another out, and see if you can get Sonic to fall into the goal or trick the camera into making you get that emerald!

It's up to you to declare the winner. Are you up 2 the task?

The screenshots below are from an outdated build (pre-restart), so don't expect them to look like what's below...

Now, this hack isn't released yet, it's nowhere close to being released, however, there is a release date planned for SHC 2025. Stay tuned for SHC 2025 and stay tuned for updates on this project!

Here's a ROM hack of Sonic 1 I've been working on throughout the past few weeks: Sonic 1 Competitive which as of writing, doesn't have a downloadable public build, but does have screenshots. Inspired by Sonic 2 VS!

Player 1 plays as Sonic and Player 2 plays as Tails. The concept is not to race to the end, but rather KILL your opponent 5 times by using monitors and with certain powerups, rolling into them. There's also a Singleplayer option, which allows you to play through the stages with the new additions and partial level redesigns.

Currently, I've only focused on Green Hill Zone Acts 1 & 2, but later, when I do release a playable ROM, I will try to add support for other levels and Act 3 of GHZ.

Playable build soon and I'd love to hear what you all think of the concept and screenshots so far!

Minus some apparent art issues (namely, Sonic's eyes on the Peelout animation), this is a very promising hack, and I'm excited to play this.

    Good luck to you.

It's been a little while, but I would like to provide a few screenshots of a newer build!

Screenshot of new afterimages, HUD, and Sonic 1's Sonic sprites have returned!

Tails and Sonic on screen together, with some minor palette issues with Tails for some bizzare reason...

The mid-stage bonus stages. An explanation to how it works is below the screenshots.

Ok, here's how the bonus stages would work.
To enter the bonus stage, a key monitor would have to be pulled among the random monitors, or you can find one in an obscure part of the stage. There, you must get as many hit points as you can before you're forced to leave. The point of the hit points are for score purposes. Rings don't have a contributing factor to whoever wins, albeit they will be compared if the hit points are a draw by the time the match ends, but whoever has the most hit points wins the match.

The Tails palette issue looks like 2 colors are switched around from where they should be. However, another solution would be making that orange on Tails brighter so that it doesn't look weird.

I thought I might as well share this next photo of a new Splash Screen I cooked up in Retro Graphics Toolkit.

Relating to release dates, it's hard to tell when I can release this, but, I will say, you can probably expect something out by SHC 2025.

Been a while since I've posted here, but I wanted to bring the news that the project's recently been restarted from scratch. The old disassembly is just way too messy to work with anymore + it'd be easier to start new when you get a new idea for the hack. However, S1C will still be showing up by SHC 2025!! Now for the cool part, if you want to help contribute to this project, you can DM me on Discord (@bl3h.ssrg), with a portfolio of your work and what you plan to help with.

We simply need UI artists and someone who could possibly help make a menu, because the Sonic 2 menus are hell to work with.
That's it for now, but, I will leave you with this quick screencap of "post-restart" S1C:

Hello! Back with an update after 2 months to say I've been working absolutely hard getting fixes and various systems working, and alas, despite not being done yet, I do have this to present...
