This is the release post for my hack of Sonic 1 on the Master System that adds FM music by using the YM2413 chip.

Feel free to drop any feedback here.
Because there is a release page on the SHC site, I'll just link to it instead of copy-pasting all the details.

In addition to the ROM itself, I plan to release the source code of the game.
BUT: I want you to find all easter eggs first.

So, here is a list of songs. When you find a song that's not listed here, post the name of the song and how you got it. I will then add it to the list.
Please note that two variations of the same song are listed as different songs.

    00: Green Hill Zone
    01: Bridge Zone
    02: Jungle Zone
    03: Labyrinth Zone
    04: Scrap Brain Zone
05: Sky Base Zone: Act 2
    06: Title Screen
    07: Map Screen
    08: Invincibility
    09: Act Clear
    0A: Death
    0B: Boss
    0C: (same as 0C)
    0D: ???
    0E: Ending
0F: Marble Zone [finish the game with all Chaos Emeralds]
    10: Bonus Zone
    11: ???
    12: (same as 00)
    13: Good End SFX
    14: Chaos Emerald
15: Game Over [get a Game Over]
    16: ???

Once the list is complete, I'll also post a VGM pack with all songs. For now, you can listen to this song, which I made a few days after the contest deadline. (You can also get an ASM, if you really want.)

    Have fun!

P.S.: Hacking the game to get a certain song playing is NOT considered a valid way of finding it.

Well, I gave it a play through and found a few things:

    • Continue Screen uses Game Over music.
    • Marble Zone music plays during the credits with all emeralds.
Also, does Scrap Brain Zone 2 have a different track to Act 1? I'm not entirely sure but they sound different, I think. Act 2 has a more indoors feel to it. This might just be me, however.

Incredible work! Thank you so much ValleyBell!

I found a bug: If you soft-rest the console, the FM registers are not zeroed, so the current note hangs.

BTW, Maxim has worked out slots 0D, 11 & 16 over at SMSPower -- through reverse engineering, if that's allowed.

Once I've got my assembler working and the disassembly done then I'll be looking to integrate this work into the 'definitive' edition of the game!

So, sixteen hours and two dozens of failed attemps later (man, do I hate Youtube's broken uploader), I finally managed to upload my full playthrough of this :)

    Click me.

    Have fun :)
