I popped the website there intentionally... :p
I did that last year so people had to wait until Contest Week to download Warped World, yet they can still see what the hack's all about AND be able to see the website if they wanted to pop a vote on the website. If you mean, "why bother posting a mere day before they go public?", then, good point. :p
I guess I just wanted to put the post together before I forgot about it completely...

I am extremely disappointed that even after two years of work and support from a fairly large team, this hack really hasn't surpassed its "dicking around with Sonic 1" status. The art for Palmtree Oasis still is unfinished and all the changed art looks unappealing. Palmtree Oasis' background in particular features flowing water that gets broken up by GHZ's background deformation, repetitive yellow stuff that I can't make out what it's supposed to be, and repetitive palm trees. The palettes aren't any better with Cosmic Station being the worst. It features vibrant orange with vibrant dark blue in the foreground which not only hurts the eyes with how strong they are but also don't look good as color choices because they're opposites, colors usually used to contrast. The level design, from what I've seen, isn't that good, either, although I haven't been able to play Cave Quest's or MopeDude's layout due to me getting stuck in a section of Cosmic Station Act 2 where you have to roll off a slope onto rotating platforms. Getting passed that part is possible but after a number of attempts I gave up. I would have continued to see what High Tide Zone had to offer if the sound test hadn't been locked for until after the game was finished. The best part of the hack is probably the music. I like the song choices (Flame Man's theme in particular) and the sound test really compliments it.

I really want to see this hack improve.

Edit: SonicBurst, the Hacking Contest version already has a post dedicated to it on the first page.

I meant level select. I got them confused because they're in the same place in Sonic 1.

    Look at the pictures closely:
1 & 2) You can go through those walls.
    3) There was supposed to be a spring there, but it disappeared, and the exit to there sometimes is locked, sometimes it's not...
    4) Badnik placement in front of spring, classic.
    5) What?

The palette is meh, not really a fan of it, the music is good, but High Tide's music is terrible (in my opinion).
Also, "play and find out for the Spindash and the Peel-Out"? Really? How am I supposed to? By getting the emeralds or completing the game?
The art isn't that great, and it's unfinished, the backgrounds are terrible, the background in Cosmic Station really clashes with the foreground, and High Tide's colors are really bland and boring.
Where the heck is the level select anyway? I swear, I could've written more if this hack had some sort of level select there...
Level design is OK at best, there's certainly room for improvement here.

I swear that my monitors colours are fucked up... This has to be the 10th time that palettes have been said to be bad. The worst thing is that my current monitor colour setting is default. I'll see if I can adjust the settings, then redo the palettes or maybe get someone else to do the palettes...

I'll take into account all the criticism and see if we can fix it! ;)

    EDIT: Level Select is unlocked after beating the demo, but there is a code (U, D, L, R, U, U, D, D, L, R, L, R, U, D, U, D, U, D, U, D. Long code, I know (sorry))

I don't think your monitor's settings are to blame here, your color choices just don't work well together. Unless you have some other works demonstrating excellent color selection on your part, perhaps you just don't have a full grasp on color theory.

For example, the green and rose don't work so well for Palmtree Oasis because the foreground generates an unnatural-looking contrast within itself using those two colors. In levels like Green Hill, Emerald Hill, or Angel Island (pre-burned), the foreground colors there tend to be green and yellow-to-orange, using more natural, earthy hues that contrast nicely against the sky and water's blues. In your level, the green and rose clash together, along with the blue of the sky and water. If you want to look at another example of analogous colors, look at Hill Top's foreground colors. The greens and teals start pushing the boundary of what looks natural, but it works because the colors themselves are still analogous by nature, so they don't clash with each other.

Cosmic Stations's palette suffers from too much saturation for a level that doesn't need it. And, much like the problem with the greens and roses from Palmtree Oasis, the colors are clashing with each other. That isn't to say complementary colors can never work together, but they just don't in these instances. In the original Starlight Zone (which uses colors I personally don't like), the green is subdued and has a white trim that contrasts the green nicely in terms of brightness because there's so little of it. In your palette, the yellow-orange gives it a stained look (much like stained teeth) and is unpleseant to look at it. My suggestion would be to keep the colors on that tinted rather than tonal or shaded.

High Tide's palette is probably the least problematic. The colors contrast nicely, making the background and foreground easily identifiable, but the colors themselves are just not very memorable. It's not bad, but it's not great either, just sort of a mixed bag.

The only time you need to be worrying about monitor settings if your colors appear different to you than it does to others (if purples to you look like magenta to others and so forth). For that, there's plenty of offline and online monitor calibration tests. Default settings tend to be the best on average, but they're not the be-all solution to color calibration. Consider the possibility that you still have something to learn about color theory before you jump to the conclusion that the fault lies with your screen.
