There won't be any more 'storyline', if you could even call it that. The hack would play until the end of GHZ2 like it does in its current form, but instead of crashing it'll just load the next level and continue with the explosions. Nothing special at all, which is why I'm wondering if it'd even be worth the effort.

I was still laughing like a madman while playing the hack. Seeing those explosions filled me with joy beyond my wildest dreams (or some crap like that). But do what you think is best man. If you don't wanna continue, don't. If you don't feel like it's worth th effort, that's more than fine. I agree with what TimpZ said anyway, gimic hacks are only fun for a little while. So, if you do continue it, great. If you don't more power to you.

I think you should rename it "Sonic 1: Director's Cut" and make each zone reflect a different director. For example, you could give Marble a dark and gothic theme, a bit like Tim Burton makes his movies. I can't think of anything else off hand at 4am but if I think of anything more I'll update this post. It'd make a pretty interesting hack though.

That's a pretty meta-ish hack, stuff that requires preexisting knowledge. I have to admit that I barely know how that and that director 'rolls', partially because I don't really give two shits about the guys behind a movie. If I have this problem lots of other people will have it as well.

I picked Michael Bay for two reasons: The inside joke and running gag that revolves around me and my explosions, and the fact that 'explosions everywhere' is a concept anyone can understand, even if they don't know Michael Bay. Heck, neither did I before people pointed it out (and to this day I still haven't watched any Transformers movie). Adapting this concept to just any other director is much harder than it sounds.

So yeah, I'll probably leave MBV at that. After all, who wants to play the entirety of Sonic 1 in (Virtual Boy)² mode anyway? :V

Sonic M Night Shyamalan version: Sonic was dead all along. Did Tails actually exist or was he a figment of a dead man's imagination? Regardless, Robotnik's robots are mostly useless and can be destroyed by water.
