Hey all, I had a random idea for a Sonic hack: What if I took the original Metroid and remade it into a Sonic game? Now for this build which is basically a glorified tech demo/proof of concept the map hasn't been remade to fit with Sonic's artstyle and size, I just threw NES Brinstar into Sonic 1 because I was bored, and I'm putting it out for everyone to play because I really don't want to work on Sonic Sunventure and have been playing a lot of Metroid recently. (If you couldn't tell I just threw this together because I was bored) This build just contains Brinstar and Tourian, featuring the (almost) exact layouts as the NES original. Collision is very janky due to the smaller size of the original Metroid map. The game audio is muted because if I left it as the original tunes people would be complaining and I can't learn how to add new music (believe me I've tried) so if you want music either play your own music or give me the music. (If you'd like fitting music, just play the original NES tracks for Brinstar and Tourian). Items: Morph Ball - Allows Sonic to roll by pressing the down button Spindash - Allows Sonic to spindash by holding down and pressing jump. Speed Boster - Lets Sonic use the Peelout by holding up and pressing jump. Doesn't yet grant invincibility. Energy Tank - I don't have the skills to overhaul the health system to be more like Metroid so it just gives 10 rings. Spring Ball - Increases Sonic's jump height. Varia - Supposed to grant Sonic immunity to acid/lava and decrease damage but I can't add either of those so it just changes his colors. Gravity - Makes Sonic immune from changes in gravity. There's no water accessible in any currently playable area of the hack and it doesn't reduce damage so it only changes Sonic's colors. Edit: For some reason even though I canceled the upload it still attached an older version of the game (which is the file called s1built.prev.bin). I have no idea why this happened but please ignore it, the proper build is the one called Sonitroid Tech Demo.bin. why does something always go wrong whenever I post something Screenshots: I do have more plans for this hack like adding more areas, remaking the map to fit Sonic more, an escape sequence, getting the screw attack and space jump (a double jump if I can't do the space jump) to work, and maybe a new boss for Kraid (because there's nothing in Sonic 1 I can reuse to pass off as Kraid, Ridley I can just use the Spring Yard boss), music, and some new enemies. Unfortunately I can't do any of that because I just don't have that skill. I hate to release a project and immediately ask for help but If anyone is willing to help me with coding in any way possible feel free to message me. If I had to do it all myself I can assure you it'd be at the very least janky. I'm not expecting anyone to want to help so after this I'll work on the remade map and try to get that looking good and I'll come back with another update.
This is a very neat concept so far. I love how you took the monitor concept and turned it into a metroid-style power up system. I'm wondering, though, do you have any plans to make sonic smaller? The original maps seem a bit too small for him, he feels like a giant when you walk through the level.
This is a really cool hack with a cool idea that I've never seen before in a Sonic hack before. For the art, a good idea would probably be using the Zero Mission art (the GBA remake) and for music I found this website with Metroid music midis in case that may be of any help https://www.khinsider.com/midi/gba/metroid-zero-mission and the NES midis too https://www.khinsider.com/midi/nes/metroid
I did attempt to make a song with Mid2SMPS but it didn't come out good at all, I'm not sure if it was because of the midi I used or something else but that left a sour taste in my mouth and I probably won't attempt it on my own again.
My ideal contact location is on Discord. I'm looking forward to continuing this hack, and I will definitely need help to fully realize my plans. Any support is welcome and greatly appreciated.
