Kega's codec is a joke, don't even consider using that for real. Yes, Gens ReRecording is the way to go. You can even slightly tool-assist your playthrough to make sure it turns out exactly like you want (e.g. showcase a particular path or something), and dump it to AVI afterwards.

You know what, I'm going to write down a tutorial (even if I can already see a lot of controversy about it), since this question pops up from time to time.

Alright, some of you wanted a video, so here's 7 minutes of GHZ: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iyyUSrHBHQE

Shit quality, but whatever, you can see everything important. Thanks to nineko for making that video tutorial. Even if others go on to question it, at least it will have served some purpose for me. =P

    A few things to note/fix:

    • I don't know what's going on at the beginning of act 1 and act 4. I'm sure it would only take a second to fix, I just haven't gone out of my way to look for it yet. It only happens in Gens and Regen and I usually use Fusion for testing, so it's not a priority.
    • Act 4's title card still displays act 3. Just need to find a suitable way to put the 4 in without messing anything up.
    • The act clear card needs to be completely fixed.
    • Mismatched chunk right after the signpost in act 2, didn't catch that before I recorded.
    • Eggman dies in 1 hit, but whatever, we all know what he does (until I get to the point where I know how to effectively modify bosses anyway).
    • Sonic actually does have a fully functional Insta-shield, which is why you occasionally hear the moving spike sound effect during some of his jumps. No actual object yet. I need to figure out the DPLC system and modify the regular shield to use it before I can put that in.
    • I also got a decently working extended camera, but it was causing issues whenever I was near the boundary of a level so I had to make sure it didn't move whenever at screen boundaries. Still needs work though, which is why you see the camera move so suddenly at 2:15 and 4:41.
    • The Sonic Heroes voice clips were added with the use of vladikcomper's MegaPCM driver, a very useful and easy to work with addition that I'm grateful he allowed everyone access to.
Anyways, hope you all like what you see.

OK, so after seeing your screenshots and such, I was worried that possibly the level layout would fall into the same pit that many others have and approached the video with a little caution. I shouldn't have. The layouts are very creative, they fit together well and you have some very unique ideas in terms of placement and object use. I'm getting a strong Sonic CD vibe (and I'm not referring to the peel-out) and that's not bad at all.

I have a recommendation for your custom loop (also shown above) if you're interested. If you're not using path swappers then disregard this (it looks like you are):

Instead of using a hole in the floor, why not have some flooring that, on the normal path is solid but, on the alternate path has no horizontal solidity and has collision on the left wall. That way, you can run around the loop without it (a) Feeling as if it's an option when you could just jump down the hole instead and (b) Looking a bit out of place compared to the rest of the layout, especially the loop before it.

Again, fantastic job. I love the attention to detail in the smallest things.

    DAGarden said it best.

Your layouts have been constructed in ways that we have never seen before; but never in terms of bad construction. There's a nice flow, the levels feel "full" and lively (not empty). And it looks rather fun to play!

I look forward to your new boss, well done!

Well, messing some stuff here and there, I came up with Mecha Sonic boss for Knuckles, I use this in my second S3K hack but for now, I'm using S2K as a base to test stuff. It's unfinished, the attacks/movement aren't polished but the boss is pretty much functional. I hope you guys enjoy!

EDIT: I want to note that the boss is UNFINISHED. Any complaints about the same attack pattern and stuff means that you clearly didn't readed the description. Thank you.

@Disco: Just holy hell =O. this is just awesome here how you thought of making an entirely new final boss for knuckles and how you made it to. just a suggestion but along with those projectiles, maybe you should code a move to where he shoots out lazers too. similar to the lazers eggman shoots out on LBZ when he's in the shuttle.

@ShockWave: not bad with the levelouts. good sense of object placements, decent custom made chunks, pretty much what DAGarden and Markey said. nothing too out of place at all so far. looking forward to seeing more of what you got.

I just finally found the time to watch ShockWave's and DiscoTheBat's videos: excellent works! Both of you have been insta-promoted to Members (with wide consensus amongst the Staff, I might add), this should serve as an example to other Trialists and newcomers, it's not impossible to be great from the beginning. Keep it up!

I only have one minor suggestion for ShockWave. I see you placed a waterfall in the background at the end of Act 2, that's annoying because the waterfall sfx keeps on playing during the score tally. That's something I'd personally advoid.

Well I can't fix Retro Graphics Toolkit issues if you don't explain why it won't work. Did you get an error message? Does the program launch? Is there something that is unclear to you as in the program runs but you are having trouble using it?

Here's my first attempt to change the GHZ's art in SonEd2, could exchange the BG (Palmtree Panic & Emerald Hill), the Palmtree (Isolated Island), and the new rotating loop. (Duration: 10 hours over 2 days)

What's happening is it's refusing to load any actual graphics. (Using Mac btw (and don't say I should use Windows, because it's not like I have a choice or anything...))

EDIT: Also, aren't you a little late to reply to my post?

Does it say "Error loading image"? If Retro Graphics toolkit did not say Error loading image then everything worked fine. Note it is expected that if you run Retro Graphics Toolkit and import an image the image will show up as black until you press Palette options-> Generate palette with X amount of colors. Then after that press tilemap actions->Dither tilemap as image (both of these are found in the menu). I doubt OS has anything to do with the issue I based my program on FLTK which is cross platform.

Got bored and decided to see if I could make this work. It actually took me less than an hour.

Honestly, I'm surprised I haven't seen more people recreate this exactly as it is in CD. Nonetheless I'm gonna try to get some use out of it, maybe I'll make it so you can only find the Chaos Emerald in the past or something. The only flaw with how I have it set up now is I lost the invincibility sparkles. Just another thing I won't get 100% done until I know how to properly do DPLCs.

I Know some have said that you have some potential, but this here is more than some. for you to do something like this in less than in hour says a lot of how much skill and knowledge you have as a sonic hacker and how I know that this is one hack that i'm more than definitely going to be looking foward to in what ever else god knows you have done or planned. thumbs up for this dude :)

Haha, nifty. Time travel's a fun little concept to play with, and, as you've discovered, it's actually relatively trivial to implement. A few people have tried to implement time travel in their hacks in the past, but the hacks usually end up being axed before completion, so good luck to you on breaking that pattern. Retrieving assets from Sonic CD to make it more authentic shouldn't be difficult, either, should you want to make it more authentic. Anyway, good luck to you, and keep at it.

Well, the other day, while agreeing on his promotion to Member, I actually pre-nominated him to be a future Pro User as well, the only question left here is how far is that future, because, seriously.

You sir, are a god among men! You seem to be picking up on the fabrics of the software quite nicely! And you have a good sense of organised style too, nice work!

Thanks everyone! I really appreciate the feedback all of you have given. It's nice to know I'm on the right track with a lot of what I've been trying out and I'm glad to know that I'm working on something everyone is looking forward to.
